 This is the number of the Israelites—the heads of ancestral houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officials—who served the king in all matters of the divisions that came on duty and went off duty month by month throughout the year. Each division numbered 24,000.
 Jashobeam son of Zabdiel was over the first division for the first month, and his division numbered 24,000. 3 He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army commanders for the first month. 4 Dodai the Ahohite was over the division for the second month, with Mikloth as leader in his division. His division numbered 24,000.
 The chief commander for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest, and his division numbered 24,000. 6 This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.
 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel, Joab’s brother, and his son Zebadiah after him. His division numbered 24,000.
 The fifth, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth the Izrahite, the commander. His division numbered 24,000.
 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. His division numbered 24,000.
 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, from the descendants of Ephraim. His division numbered 24,000.

 Over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zichri was leader; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah;
 for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;
 for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael;
 for Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel;
 for the descendants of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah;
 for the half of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner;
 for Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 23 David did not count those twenty years old and younger, because the LORD had said he would make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count but did not finish. Wrath came on Israel because of this, and the number was not entered in the account of the chronicles of King David.
 Azmaveth son of Adiel was over the king’s treasuries. Jonathan son of Uzziah was over the storehouses in the countryside, cities, villages, and towers.
 Ezri son of Chelub was over the field workers who tilled the ground. 27 Shimei the Ramathite was over the vineyards, and Zabdi the Shiphmite was over the vineyard produce for the wine stores.
 Baal-hanan the Gederite was over the olive and sycamore-fig trees in the foothills, and Joash was over the oil stores.
 Shirtai the Sharonite was over the herds grazing in Sharon, and Shaphat son of Adlai was over the herds in the valleys.
 Obil the Ishmaelite was over the camels, and Jehdeiah the Meronothite was over the female donkeys.
 Jaziz the Hagrite was over the flocks. All these were in charge of King David’s property. 32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons. 33 Ahithophel was the king’s counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
 After Ahithophel came Jehoiada son of Benaiah and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army.
