27
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “As for you, son of man, take up a lament over Tyre.
3 Say to Tyre, who dwells at the entrances to the sea, merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says:
Tyre, you said, “I am perfect in beauty.”
4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas.
Your builders perfected your beauty.
5 They made all your planks of cypress from Senir.
They took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
6 They made your oars of oak from Bashan.
A company of Ashurites made your deck of ivory from the coastlands of Kittim.
7 Fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail, serving as your banner.
Blue and purple from the coastlands of Elishah were your awning.
8 The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers.
Your wise men, Tyre, were in you;
they were your pilots.
9 The elders of Gebal and its wise men were in you, repairing your seams.
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were in you to trade your merchandise.
10 Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung shields and helmets in you; they gave you splendor. 11 The men of Arvad and your army were on your walls all around, and the Gammadites were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty. 12 Tarshish traded with you because of your abundant wealth of every kind. They gave silver, iron, tin, and lead in exchange for your wares. 13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders. They gave human beings and copper vessels in exchange for your merchandise. 14 Those of the house of Togarmah gave horses, steeds, and mules in exchange for your wares. 15 The men of Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were your customers; they brought ivory tusks and ebony as your payment. 16 Aram traded with you because of your many products. They gave emeralds, purple cloth, embroidery, fine linen, coral, and agate in exchange for your wares. 17 Judah and the land of Israel were your traders. They gave wheat from Minnith, pannag, honey, oil, and balm in exchange for your merchandise. 18 Damascus traded with you because of your many products and your abundant wealth of every kind, bringing wine from Helbon and white wool. 19 Dan and Javan from Uzal traded for your wares. Wrought iron, cassia, and aromatic cane were among your merchandise. 20 Dedan traded with you in saddle blankets. 21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers. They traded with you in lambs, rams, and male goats; in these they were your traders. 22 The merchants of Sheba and Raamah were your traders. They gave the finest spices of every kind, all kinds of precious stones, and gold in exchange for your wares. 23 Haran, Canneh, Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Assyria, and Kilmad were your traders. 24 They traded with you in splendid garments, blue and embroidered cloaks, and chests of multicolored cloth, bound with cords and firmly secured, among your merchandise. 25 The ships of Tarshish carried your merchandise. You were filled and grew very heavy in the heart of the seas.
26 Your rowers brought you into great waters.
The east wind wrecked you in the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise, your sailors and pilots, those who repair your seams, those who trade your merchandise, all your men of war in you, and all the company within you will fall into the heart of the seas on the day of your fall.
28 The pasturelands will shake at the sound of your pilots’ cry.
29 All who handle the oar will come down from their ships.
The sailors and all the pilots of the sea will stand on the land.
30 They will raise their voices over you and cry out bitterly.
They will throw dust on their heads and roll in ashes.
31 They will shave their heads for you and put on sackcloth.
They will weep over you with bitterness of soul, with bitter mourning.
32 In their wailing they will take up a lament over you and lament for you: “Who is like Tyre, silenced in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares went out over the seas, you satisfied many peoples.
With your abundant wealth and merchandise you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 When you were wrecked by the seas in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company fell within you.
35 All the inhabitants of the coastlands are appalled at you.
Their kings shudder with terror, their faces troubled.
36 The merchants among the peoples hiss at you.
You have become a terror, and you are gone forever.” ’ ”
