36
1 Elihu continued and said,
2 “Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I still have words on God's behalf.
3 I will bring my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are not false;
one complete in knowledge is with you.
5 Look, God is mighty and despises no one;
he is mighty in strength of understanding.
6 He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives justice to the afflicted.
7 He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous;
with kings on the throne he seats them forever, and they are exalted.
8 If they are bound in fetters, caught in cords of affliction,
9 he tells them of their deeds and their transgressions, for they have acted arrogantly.
10 He opens their ears to correction and tells them to turn from evil.
11 If they listen and serve him, they will finish their days in prosperity and their years in pleasures.
12 But if they do not listen, they will pass away by the sword and die without knowledge.
13 The godless in heart heap up anger;
they do not cry for help when he binds them.
14 Their soul dies in youth, and their life ends among male shrine prostitutes.
15 He delivers the afflicted through their affliction and opens their ears through oppression.
16 He would also draw you from the jaws of distress to a broad place with no confinement, and what is set on your table would be full of rich food.
17 But you are full of the judgment of the wicked;
judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Beware lest wrath entice you into mockery;
do not let a great ransom turn you aside.
19 Can your cry for help keep you from distress, or all the efforts of your strength?
20 Do not long for the night, when peoples are taken from their place.
21 Take care;
do not turn to evil, for you have chosen it over affliction.
22 Look, God is exalted in his power.
What teacher is like him?
23 Who has appointed his way for him?
Who has said, ‘You have done wrong’?
24 Remember to magnify his work, of which men have sung.
25 All mankind has seen it;
mortals behold it from afar.
26 Look, God is great, beyond our knowledge;
the number of his years is beyond searching.
27 For he draws up drops of water;
they distill rain from his mist,
28 which the clouds pour down and shower on mankind abundantly.
29 Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion?
30 Look, he spreads his light around him and covers the roots of the sea.
31 For by these he judges peoples and gives food in abundance.
32 He covers his hands with lightning and commands it against the assailant.
33 Its roar tells of him;
the cattle also tell of what is coming.
