Exodus.
Chapter 28.
“Bring near to you Aaron your brother and his sons with him from among the Israelites, that he may serve me as priest: Aaron and Aaron’s sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
You shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and beauty.
Speak to all who are wise in heart, each of whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him to serve me as priest.
These are the garments they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a patterned tunic, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons, that he may serve me as priest.
They shall take the gold, the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and the fine linen.
They shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen, the work of a skilled craftsman.
It shall have two shoulder pieces joined at its two ends, so that it is joined together.
Its skillfully woven band shall be made like it and of one piece with it: gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen.
You shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel,
six of their names on one stone and the remaining six names on the other stone, in the order of their birth.
As a stone engraver engraves a seal, you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel. You shall mount them in gold settings.
You shall put the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD on his two shoulders as a memorial.
You shall make gold settings,
and two chains of pure gold; you shall make them twisted like cords and attach the corded chains to the settings.
You shall make a breastpiece of judgment, the work of a skilled craftsman. You shall make it like the ephod; you shall make it of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen.
It shall be square when folded double, about nine inches long and nine inches wide.
You shall set in it four rows of stones: a carnelian, a topaz, and an emerald in the first row;
a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond in the second row;
a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst in the third row;
and a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper in the fourth row. They shall be mounted in gold settings.
The stones shall be twelve, corresponding to the names of the sons of Israel. Each shall be engraved like a seal with one name, for the twelve tribes.
You shall make for the breastpiece chains of pure gold, twisted like cords.
You shall make two gold rings for the breastpiece and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece.
You shall attach the two gold cords to the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece.
You shall attach the two ends of the two cords to the two settings, and put them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod at its front.
You shall make two gold rings and put them on the two ends of the breastpiece, on its inner edge facing the ephod.
You shall make two gold rings and put them at the lower part of the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, at its front, close to its joining, above the woven band of the ephod.
They shall tie the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord, so that it lies above the woven band of the ephod and the breastpiece does not come loose from the ephod.
Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment over his heart when he enters the Holy Place, as a memorial before the LORD continually.
You shall put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastpiece of judgment, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he enters before the LORD. Aaron shall bear the judgment of the Israelites over his heart before the LORD continually.
You shall make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth.
It shall have an opening for the head in its center, with a woven binding around the opening, like the opening of a coat of armor, so that it does not tear.
You shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn all around its hem, and gold bells between them all around,
a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe.
Aaron shall wear it when ministering, and its sound shall be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the LORD and when he comes out, so that he does not die.
You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a seal, ‘Holy to the LORD.’
You shall fasten it with a blue cord to the turban; it shall be at the front of the turban.
It shall be on Aaron’s forehead, and Aaron shall bear the guilt of the holy things that the Israelites consecrate in all their holy gifts. It shall be on his forehead continually, that they may be accepted before the LORD.
You shall weave the tunic of fine linen in patterned work, and make a turban of fine linen; you shall make a sash, the work of an embroiderer.
For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics and sashes, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and beauty.
You shall clothe Aaron your brother and his sons with him in these garments. You shall anoint them, ordain them, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests.
You shall make linen undergarments for them to cover their naked flesh; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs.
Aaron and his sons shall wear them when they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they do not incur guilt and die. It shall be a perpetual statute for him and his offspring after him.”
