Deuteronomy.
Chapter 17.
You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or an animal from the flock that has a blemish or any defect, for that is an abomination to the LORD your God.
If there is found among you, within any of your gates that the LORD your God is giving you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the eyes of the LORD your God, transgressing his covenant,
and goes and serves other gods and bows down to them, to the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded,
and it is reported to you and you hear of it, then inquire carefully. If it is true and the matter is confirmed that this abomination has been done in Israel,
then bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing, the man or the woman, and stone them to death.
On the testimony of two witnesses or three witnesses, the one condemned to death shall be put to death. He shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness.
The hand of the witnesses shall be the first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from among you.
If a case is too difficult for you to judge, between one kind of bloodshed and another, between one legal claim and another, or between one injury and another, matters of dispute within your gates, then arise and go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.
Go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office in those days. Inquire, and they shall declare to you the decision of the judgment.
Act according to the decision they declare to you from that place the LORD will choose, and be careful to do all that they teach you.
Act according to the instruction they teach you and the judgment they tell you. You shall not turn aside from the decision they declare to you, to the right or to the left.
The man who acts presumptuously, refusing to listen to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, or to the judge, that man shall die. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.
All the people shall hear and fear and no longer act presumptuously.
When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, possess it and live in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations around me,’
you shall surely set over you a king whom the LORD your God will choose. You shall set a king over you from among your brothers. You may not set over you a foreigner who is not your brother.
Only he shall not multiply horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the LORD has said to you, ‘You shall never return by this way again.’
He shall not multiply wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn aside, nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.
When he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law from what is before the Levitical priests.
It shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them,
so that his heart is not lifted up above his brothers and he does not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or to the left, so that he and his sons may prolong their days in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.
