Joshua.
Chapter 21.
The heads of the ancestral houses of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.
They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to live in, with their pasturelands for our livestock.”
So the people of Israel gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands from their own inheritance, according to the LORD’s command.
The lot came out for the clans of the Kohathites. The descendants of Aaron the priest, who were among the Levites, received by lot thirteen cities from the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon, and the tribe of Benjamin.
The rest of the descendants of Kohath received by lot ten cities from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The descendants of Gershon received by lot thirteen cities from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun.
The people of Israel gave these cities and their pasturelands to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
From the tribe of the descendants of Judah and the tribe of the descendants of Simeon they gave these cities, mentioned by name,
to the descendants of Aaron, of the Kohathite clans, of the descendants of Levi, for theirs was the first lot.
They gave them Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its surrounding pasturelands. Arba was the father of Anak.
But they gave the fields of the city and its villages to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
To the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, a city of refuge for the killer, with its pasturelands; Libnah with its pasturelands;
Jattir with its pasturelands; Eshtemoa with its pasturelands;
Holon with its pasturelands; Debir with its pasturelands;
Ain with its pasturelands; Juttah with its pasturelands; and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands—nine cities from these two tribes.
From the tribe of Benjamin: Gibeon with its pasturelands; Geba with its pasturelands;
Anathoth with its pasturelands; and Almon with its pasturelands—four cities.
All the cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their pasturelands.
The clans of the descendants of Kohath, the remaining Levites of the descendants of Kohath, received the cities of their allotment from the tribe of Ephraim.
They gave them Shechem, a city of refuge for the killer, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim; Gezer with its pasturelands;
Kibzaim with its pasturelands; and Beth-horon with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the tribe of Dan: Eltekeh with its pasturelands; Gibbethon with its pasturelands;
Aijalon with its pasturelands; and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the half-tribe of Manasseh: Taanach with its pasturelands; and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands—two cities.
Ten cities in all, with their pasturelands, belonged to the clans of the rest of the descendants of Kohath.
To the descendants of Gershon, of the clans of the Levites, they gave from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the killer, with its pasturelands; and Beeshterah with its pasturelands—two cities.
From the tribe of Issachar: Kishion with its pasturelands; Daberath with its pasturelands;
Jarmuth with its pasturelands; and En-gannim with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the tribe of Asher: Mishal with its pasturelands; Abdon with its pasturelands;
Helkath with its pasturelands; and Rehob with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee, a city of refuge for the killer, with its pasturelands; Hammoth-dor with its pasturelands; and Kartan with its pasturelands—three cities.
All the cities of the Gershonites, according to their clans, were thirteen cities with their pasturelands.
To the clans of the descendants of Merari, the remaining Levites, they gave from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam with its pasturelands; Kartah with its pasturelands;
Dimnah with its pasturelands; and Nahalal with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the tribe of Reuben: Bezer with its pasturelands; Jahaz with its pasturelands;
Kedemoth with its pasturelands; and Mephaath with its pasturelands—four cities.
From the tribe of Gad: Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the killer, with its pasturelands; Mahanaim with its pasturelands;
Heshbon with its pasturelands; and Jazer with its pasturelands—four cities in all.
All the cities for the descendants of Merari according to their clans, the remaining clans of the Levites, were twelve cities by their allotment.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the people of Israel were forty-eight cities with their pasturelands.
Each of these cities had its surrounding pasturelands. So it was with all these cities.
The LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors. They possessed it and lived in it.
The LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies could stand against them. The LORD gave all their enemies into their hand.
Not one word of all the good words the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel failed. All came to pass.
