2 Kings.
Chapter 14.
In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah became king.
He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, though not like his ancestor David. He did everything as his father Joash had done.
Yet the high places were not removed. The people still sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.
When the kingdom was firmly in his hand, he struck down the servants who had killed his father the king.
But he did not put the murderers’ sons to death, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, and children shall not be put to death for their fathers. Each person shall be put to death for his own sin.”
He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle. He called it Joktheel, its name to this day.
Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face one another.”
Jehoash king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah: “The thistle in Lebanon sent word to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ But a wild animal in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.
You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why stir up trouble and fall, you and Judah with you?”
But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at Beth-shemesh in Judah.
Judah was defeated by Israel, and each man fled to his tents.
Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh. He came to Jerusalem and broke down about 600 feet of Jerusalem’s wall, from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the king’s palace, along with hostages, and returned to Samaria.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehoash, what he did, his might, and how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam reigned in his place.
Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
They formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and put him to death there.
They brought him back on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the City of David.
Then all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.
He rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after the king had rested with his ancestors.
In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years.
He did evil in the sight of the LORD. He did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin.
He restored Israel’s border from the entrance to Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, which he spoke through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath-hepher.
For the LORD saw that Israel’s affliction was very bitter. There was no one left, slave or free, and no one to help Israel.
The LORD had not said that he would blot out Israel’s name from under heaven, so he saved them through Jeroboam son of Joash.
As for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, all that he did, his might in war, and how he recovered for Israel Damascus and Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel, and his son Zechariah reigned in his place.
