Ezekiel.
Chapter 31.
In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude, ‘Whom are you like in your greatness?
Look, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches, a forest of shade, and great height. Its top was among the thick boughs.
The waters made it grow; the deep made it tall. The deep’s rivers ran around the place where it was planted, and the deep sent its channels to all the trees of the field.
So its height rose above all the trees of the field. Its boughs multiplied, and its branches grew long because of the abundant waters as it spread out.
All the birds of the heavens nested in its boughs, and all the beasts of the field gave birth beneath its branches. All the many nations lived in its shade.
It was beautiful in its greatness and the length of its branches, for its root was beside abundant waters.
The cedars in the garden of God could not overshadow it. The cypresses could not compare with its boughs, nor the plane trees with its branches. No tree in the garden of God could equal its beauty.
I made it beautiful with its many branches, and all the trees of Eden in the garden of God envied it.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you grew tall, and it set its top among the thick boughs and its heart grew proud of its height,
I handed it over to a mighty one of the nations, who would surely deal with it. I drove it out because of its wickedness.
Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and abandoned it. Its branches fell on the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs were broken in all the ravines of the land. All the peoples of the earth went down from its shade and abandoned it.
All the birds of the heavens will dwell on its fallen trunk, and all the beasts of the field will be among its branches,
so that none of the trees by the waters will exalt themselves in height or set their tops among the thick boughs, and none of those that drink water will stand proudly in their height. For they have all been given over to death, to the depths of the earth, among human beings, with those who descend to the pit.
This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day it went down to Sheol, I caused mourning. I covered the deep on its account, restrained its rivers, and held back the abundant waters. I darkened Lebanon on its account, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to Sheol with those who descend to the pit. All the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the depths of the earth.
They too went down with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword—those who were its arm, who lived in its shade among the nations.
Whom are you like in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? You will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the depths of the earth. You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”
