12
1 When Rehoboam's kingdom was established and he had become strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.
2 In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD. 3 He came with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. The troops who came with him from Egypt were beyond counting: Libyans, Sukkiim, and Cushites. 4 He captured Judah's fortified cities and came as far as Jerusalem.
5 Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have abandoned me, so I too have abandoned you to Shishak's hand.’ ” 6 The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.” 7 When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but will grant them some deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak. 8 Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may know what it is to serve me and to serve the kingdoms of the earth.”
9 Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem and took the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's palace. He took everything. He also took the gold shields Solomon had made. 10 King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and entrusted them to the commanders of the guards who kept watch at the entrance of the king's palace. 11 Whenever the king went to the house of the LORD, the guards came and carried the shields, then returned them to the guardroom. 12 When Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD's anger turned away from him, so as not to destroy him completely. There were also good things in Judah.
13 King Rehoboam established himself firmly in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. 14 He did evil because he did not set his heart on seeking the LORD.
15 The acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the genealogical records of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer? There were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. 16 Rehoboam lay down with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. His son Abijah reigned in his place.
