20
1 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, encouraged them, and said farewell. Then he left for Macedonia. 2 He traveled through those regions, encouraged them with many words, and came to Greece, 3 where he spent three months. When the Jews formed a plot against him as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. 4 He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe and Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 5 These men came to Troas and waited for us there. 6 We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread and reached them in Troas in five days. We stayed there seven days.
7 On the first day of the week, when we had gathered to break bread, Paul spoke with them. Since he intended to leave the next day, he prolonged his message until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window, sinking into a deep sleep as Paul continued speaking at length. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 But Paul went down, fell upon him, and embraced him, saying, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11 Then he went upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left. 12 They brought the young man away alive and were greatly comforted.
13 We went ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there, for he had arranged it this way and intended to travel on foot. 14 When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene. 15 We sailed from there and the next day came opposite Chios. The following day we arrived at Samos, and the day after that we came to Miletus. 16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he would not spend time in Asia. He was hurrying to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, if possible.
17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church. 18 When they came to him, he said to them, “You know how I lived among you the whole time, from the first day I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that befell me through the plots of the Jews. 20 I did not hold back from declaring to you anything beneficial and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 bearing solemn witness to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus. 22 And now, look, bound by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that in every city the Holy Spirit bears witness to me that bonds and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not count my life as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear solemn witness to the gospel of the grace of God.
25 And now I know that none of you among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am clean from the blood of all, 27 for I did not hold back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he acquired with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise, speaking twisted things to draw the disciples away after themselves. 31 Therefore be watchful, remembering that for three years, night and day, I never stopped admonishing each one of you with tears. 32 And now I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands served my needs and those of my companions. 35 In everything I showed you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
36 After saying this, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 They all wept deeply, embraced Paul, and kissed him, 38 grieving most of all over his statement that they would not see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
