1 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, while Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed with his face to the ground. 2 He said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house, spend the night, and wash your feet. Then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said, “No, we will spend the night in the square.” 3 But he urged them strongly, so they turned aside with him and entered his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, young and old, all the people from every quarter. 5 They called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we may have sexual relations with them!” 6 Lot went out to them at the entrance and closed the door behind him. 7 He said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have not had sexual relations with a man. Please let me bring them out to you, and do to them what seems good to you. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shadow of my roof.” 9 They said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This man came to live here as a foreigner, and now he insists on acting as judge! Now we will treat you worse than them!” They pressed hard against the man Lot and moved forward to break down the door. 10 But the men reached out their hands, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11 They struck the men at the entrance of the house with blindness, young and old, so that they wore themselves out trying to find the entrance. 12 Then the men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone who belongs to you in the city? Bring them out of this place, 13 for we are about to destroy this place. The outcry against its people has grown great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.” 14 Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up! Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking. 15 As dawn rose, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, so that you will not be swept away in the punishment of the city.” 16 But he lingered. So the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, because the LORD had compassion on him. They brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 When they had brought them outside, one of them said, “Escape for your life! Do not look back or stop anywhere in the plain. Escape to the hills, so that you will not be swept away.” 18 Lot said to them, “No, please, my Lord! 19 Look, your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown me great kindness by preserving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake me and I will die. 20 Look, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Please let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be spared.” 21 He said to him, “I grant you this also: I will not overthrow the city you have spoken of. 22 Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun had risen over the earth when Lot entered Zoar. 24 Then the LORD rained sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah from the LORD out of heaven. 25 He overthrew those cities and all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and the vegetation of the ground. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 Abraham rose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 He looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and saw the smoke of the land rising like the smoke of a furnace. 29 Thus, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out from the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities where Lot had lived. 30 Lot went up from Zoar and settled in the hills with his two daughters, because he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 The older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to have relations with us, as is the way of all the earth. 32 Come, let us give our father wine to drink and lie with him, so that we may preserve offspring through our father.” 33 So they gave their father wine to drink that night, and the older daughter went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she got up. 34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, last night I lay with my father. Let us give him wine to drink tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, so that we may preserve offspring through our father.” 35 So they gave their father wine to drink that night also, and the younger daughter got up and lay with him. He did not know when she lay down or when she got up. 36 Thus both daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter bore a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger daughter also bore a son and named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
