23
1 The oracle concerning Tyre.
Wail, ships of Tarshish, for it has been devastated, without house or entrance!
From the land of Kittim the news has been revealed to them.
2 Be silent, inhabitants of the coastland, whom the merchants of Sidon crossing the sea have supplied.
3 Across many waters the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue;
she was the marketplace of nations.
4 Be ashamed, Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, “I have not been in labor or given birth;
I have not reared young men or brought up virgins.”
5 When the report reaches Egypt, they will writhe at the news of Tyre.
6 Cross over to Tarshish;
wail, inhabitants of the coastland.
7 Is this your exultant city, whose beginnings were in ancient days?
Her feet shall carry her far away to settle.
8 Who has purposed this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9 The LORD of hosts has purposed it, to profane the pride of all beauty and bring into contempt all the honored of the earth.
10 Pass through your land like the Nile, daughter Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 He has stretched out his hand over the sea and shaken kingdoms;
the LORD has commanded concerning Canaan that its strongholds be destroyed.
12 He said, “You shall exult no more, oppressed virgin daughter Sidon.
Rise, cross over to Kittim;
even there you shall have no rest.”
13 Behold the land of the Chaldeans!
This people is no more;
Assyria appointed it for desert beasts.
They raised their siege towers and stripped its palaces;
he made it a ruin.
14 Wail, ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold has been devastated!
15 In that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will be with Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
16 “Take a lyre, go about the city, forgotten prostitute!
Play skillfully, sing many songs, that you may be remembered.”
17 At the end of seventy years the LORD will visit Tyre, and she will return to her prostitute’s wages and prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the earth on the face of the world. 18 But her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the LORD; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her merchandise will be for those who dwell before the LORD, to eat their fill and have fine clothing.
