1 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and said to them, 2 “Tell the Israelites, ‘These are the living creatures you may eat from among all the land animals: 3 You may eat any animal that divides the hoof, has the hoof split in two, and brings up the cud. 4 But among those that bring up the cud or divide the hoof, you must not eat these: the camel, because it brings up the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean to you. 5 The hyrax, because it brings up the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean to you. 6 The hare, because it brings up the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean to you. 7 The pig, because it divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. 8 You must not eat their flesh or touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you. 9 Of all that is in the water, you may eat these: anything in the water, in the seas and streams, that has fins and scales—you may eat it. 10 But anything in the seas and streams that does not have both fins and scales, among all the creatures swarming in the water and all the living creatures in the water, is detestable to you. 11 They shall be detestable to you. You must not eat their flesh, and you must regard their carcasses as detestable. 12 Anything in the water that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you. 13 Among the flying creatures, you must regard these as detestable; they must not be eaten, for they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, and the vulture; 14 the kite and the falcon of every kind; 15 every raven of every kind; 16 the ostrich, the owl, the gull, and the hawk of every kind; 17 the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl; 18 the white owl, the pelican, and the carrion vulture; 19 the stork, the heron of every kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. 20 Every winged swarming creature that walks on four legs is detestable to you.
21 Yet among all the winged swarming creatures that walk on four legs, you may eat those that have legs above their feet with which to leap on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat the locust of every kind, the bald locust of every kind, the cricket of every kind, and the grasshopper of every kind. 23 Every winged swarming creature that has four feet is detestable to you. 24 By these you become unclean: whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until evening. 25 Whoever carries any part of their carcasses must wash his clothes and shall be unclean until evening. 26 Every animal that divides the hoof but does not have it split in two and does not bring up the cud is unclean to you. Whoever touches them shall be unclean. 27 Among all the animals that walk on four legs, those that walk on their paws are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until evening. 28 Whoever carries their carcasses must wash his clothes and shall be unclean until evening. They are unclean to you.
29 Among the swarming creatures that swarm on the ground, these are unclean to you: the weasel, the mouse, and the large lizard of every kind; 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. 31 These are unclean to you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. 32 Anything on which one of them falls when it is dead shall be unclean, whether a wooden utensil, a garment, a skin, sackcloth, or any article used for work. It must be put in water and shall be unclean until evening; then it shall be clean. 33 If one of them falls into an earthenware vessel, everything inside it shall be unclean, and you must break the vessel. 34 Any food that may be eaten, on which water comes, shall be unclean, and anything that may be drunk in any such vessel shall be unclean. 35 Anything on which any part of their carcasses falls shall be unclean. An oven or a cooking hearth must be demolished; they are unclean and shall be unclean to you. 36 But a spring or a cistern that collects water shall remain clean, though whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean. 37 If any part of their carcasses falls on seed to be sown, it is clean. 38 But if water has been put on the seed and any part of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean to you.
39 If one of the animals you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening. 40 Whoever eats any of its carcass must wash his clothes and shall be unclean until evening. Whoever carries its carcass must wash his clothes and shall be unclean until evening. 41 Every swarming creature that swarms on the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten. 42 Of all the swarming creatures that swarm on the ground, you must not eat anything that goes on its belly, anything that walks on four legs, or anything with many legs, for they are detestable. 43 Do not make yourselves detestable by any swarming creature that swarms. Do not make yourselves unclean through them and so become unclean by them. 44 For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any swarming creature that creeps on the ground. 45 For I am the LORD who brings you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall be holy, for I am holy. 46 This is the law concerning the land animals, the flying creatures, every living creature that moves in the water, and every creature that swarms on the ground, 47 to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animals that may be eaten and the animals that must not be eaten.’ ”
