1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 As soon as he stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit met him from the tombs. 3 He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Continually, night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he cried out and cut himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed before him. 7 He cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I put you under oath by God: do not torment me!” 8 For Jesus had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 He asked him, “What is your name?” He said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 He begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding there near the mountain. 12 They begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 He permitted them. The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd, about two thousand pigs, rushed down the steep slope into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 The herdsmen fled and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people came to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by demons, the one who had the legion, sitting clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man possessed by demons, and about the pigs. 17 They began to beg him to leave their territory. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 He did not allow him, but said to him, “Go home to your own people and tell them all the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 He went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
21 When Jesus crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea. 22 One of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came and, seeing him, fell at his feet 23 and pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 He went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed around him. 25 A woman had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered much under many physicians and spent all she had, but had not improved at all. Instead, she had grown worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his clothes, I will be made well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But he looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 The woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell before him and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house and said, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher any longer?” 36 But Jesus, overhearing what was being said, told the synagogue ruler, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 37 He allowed no one to accompany him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he saw a commotion, with people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeping.” 40 They laughed at him. But he put them all outside, took the child’s father and mother and those with him, and went in where the child was. 41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I tell you, get up.” 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. Immediately they were overcome with great amazement. 43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know about this and told them to give her something to eat.
