1 The heads of the ancestral households of the clan of the sons of Gilead son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of the sons of Joseph, came forward. They spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the Israelites’ ancestral households. 2 They said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land to the Israelites as an inheritance by lot. My lord was also commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. 3 If they marry men from one of the other tribes of the Israelites, their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. It will be taken from the allotted portion of our inheritance. 4 And if the Jubilee comes for the Israelites, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry, and their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers’ tribe.” 5 Moses commanded the Israelites at the LORD’s command, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph is right in what it says. 6 This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: ‘They may marry whomever they think best, but they shall marry only within the clan of their father’s tribe.’ 7 No inheritance of the Israelites shall pass from tribe to tribe, for each of the Israelites shall hold fast to the inheritance of his ancestral tribe. 8 Every daughter who inherits an inheritance among the tribes of the Israelites shall marry a man from the clan of her father’s tribe, so that each of the Israelites may inherit the inheritance of his fathers. 9 No inheritance shall pass from one tribe to another tribe, for each of the tribes of the Israelites shall hold fast to its inheritance.” 10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD had commanded Moses. 11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, married the sons of their father’s brothers. 12 They married within the clans of the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s clan. 13 These are the commandments and judgments that the LORD commanded the Israelites through Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
