TheycameagaintoJerusalem. WhileJesuswaswalkinginthetemple courts, thechief priests, the experts inthe law, andtheelderscameuptohimandsaid, “Bywhatauthorityareyoudoingthesethings? Orwhogaveyouthisauthoritytodothesethings?” Jesussaidtothem, “Iwillaskyouonequestion. AnswermeandIwilltellyoubywhatauthorityIdothesethings: John’s baptism – wasitfromheavenorfrompeople? Answer me.” They discussed withoneanother, saying, “Ifwesay, ‘Fromheaven,’ hewillsay, ‘Thenwhydidyounotbelievehim?’ Butifwesay, ‘Frompeople – ’” (theyfearedthecrowd, fortheyallconsideredJohntobe truly aprophet). SotheyansweredJesus, “We don’tknow.” ThenJesussaidtothem, “NeitherwillItellyoubywhatauthorityIamdoingthesethings.” Thenhe began tospeaktotheminparables: “A man planteda vineyard. Heputa fence aroundit, dugapitfor its winepress, andbuilta watchtower. Thenheleaseditto tenant farmers andwentona journey. Atharvesttimehesentaslavetothetenantstocollectfromthemhisportionofthecrop. Butthose tenants seizedhis slave, beathim, andsenthim away empty-handed. Sohesentanotherslavetothemagain. Thisonethey struck ontheheadand treated outrageously. Hesentanother, andthatonethey killed. This happened tomanyothers, someofwhomwerebeaten, others killed. Hehadone left, hisone dear son. Finallyhe sent himtothem, saying, ‘Theywillrespectmyson.’ Butthosetenantssaidtooneanother, ‘Thisistheheir. Come, let’s kill himandtheinheritancewillbeours!’ Sotheyseizedhim, killed him, andthrewhis body outofthe vineyard. Whatthenwilltheownerofthe vineyard do? Hewillcomeand destroy thosetenantsandgivethe vineyard toothers. Haveyounot read thisscripture: ‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Nowtheywantedtoarresthim (buttheyfearedthecrowd), becausetheyrealizedthathetoldthisparableagainstthem. Sothey left himandwent away.
