Book 1
(Psalms 1-41)
The Epilogue (42:7-17) AftertheLordhadspokenthesethingstoJob, hesaidtoEliphazthe Temanite, “My angeris stirred upagainst you and your twofriends, becauseyou have notspokenabout mewhatis right, as my servantJobhas. So nowtakesevenbullsand sevenramsand gotomy servantJoband offera burnt offeringforyourselves. And my servantJobwill intercedeforyou, and I will respect him, sothatIdonotdealwithyouaccordingtoyourfolly, becauseyou have notspokenabout mewhatis right, as my servantJobhas.” So they went, Eliphazthe Temanite, Bildadthe Shuhite, and Zopharthe Naamathite, and didjustastheLordhad toldthem; andtheLordhad respectfor Job. SotheLordrestoredwhat Jobhad lostafterheprayedforhis friends, andtheLorddoubledallthat had belongedto Job. So they cametohim, allhis brothersand sistersand allwho had knownhim before, and they dinedwithhim in his house. They comfortedhim and consoledhim for allthe troubletheLordhadbroughtonhim, and eachonegavehim a piece of silverand agoldring. SotheLordblessedthe second partof Job’slife more than the first. He had 14,000sheep, 6,000camels, 1,000yokeof oxen, and 1,000female donkeys. And he also had sevensonsand threedaughters. The firstdaughter he namedJemimah, the secondKeziah, and the thirdKeren-Happuch. Nowhere in allthe landcould womenbe foundwho were as beautifulas Job’sdaughters, and their fathergrantedtheman inheritancealongsidetheir brothers. AfterthisJoblived140years; he sawhis childrenand their childrento the fourthgeneration. And so Jobdied, oldand fullof days. How blessedis the onewho does notfollowthe adviceof the wicked, or standinthe pathwaywith sinners, orsit inthe assemblyof scoffers! Insteadhe finds pleasurein obeyingthe Lord’s|strong="H3069"commands;he meditatesonhis commands dayand night. He is likea treeplantedby flowingstreams; ityieldsits fruitat the proper time, and itsleavesneverfall off.He succeedsin everythinghe attempts. Notsowith the wicked!Insteadthey are like wind-drivenchaff. For this reasonthe wickedcannotwithstandjudgment, nor can sinnersjoin the assemblyof the godly. CertainlytheLordguardsthe wayof the godly, but the wayof the wickedends in destruction. Whydo the nationsrebel?Whyarethe countries devisingplots that will fail? The kingsof the earthform a unitedfront;the rulerscollaborateagainsttheLordand his anointed king. They say, “Let’stearoff the shacklesthey’veputon us!Let’sfree ourselves fromtheir ropes!” The one enthronedinheavenlaughsin disgust;the Lordtauntsthem. Thenhe angrilyspeakstothemand terrifiesthem in his rage, saying, “I myselfhave installedmy kingonZion, my holyhill.” The kingsays, “Iwillannouncethe Lord’s|strong="H3069"decree. He saidto me:‘Youare my son! This very dayIhave become your father! Askme, and I will giveyou the nationsas your inheritance, the endsof the earthas your personal property. You will breakthemwith an ironscepter; you will smashthem like a potter’sjar!’” So now, you kings, do what is wise; you rulersof the earth, submit to correction! ServetheLordin fear!Repentin terror! Give sincere homage!Otherwisehewillbeangry, and you will diebecauseof your behavior, when his angerquicklyignites. How blessedare allwho take shelterinhim!
