The Futility of All Endeavor
1 The words of the AEccl 1:12; 7:27; 12:8-10Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 “1Or Futility of futilitiesAPs 39:5, 6; 62:9; 144:4; Eccl 12:8; Rom 8:20Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher,
“1Or Futility of futilitiesVanity of vanities! All is 2Or futilevanity.”
3 AEccl 2:11; 3:9; 5:16What advantage does man have in all his work
Which he does under the sun?
4 A generation goes and a generation comes,
But the APs 104:5; 119:90earth 1Lit standsremains forever.
5 Also, APs 19:6the sun rises and the sun sets;
And 1Lit pantinghastening to its place it rises there again.
Then turning toward the north,
The wind continues 2Lit turningswirling along;
And on its circular courses the wind returns.
7 All the rivers 1Lit goflow into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full.
To the place where the rivers 1Lit goflow,
There they 1Lit goflow again.
8 All things are wearisome;
Man is not able to tell it.
AProv 27:20; Eccl 4:8The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor is the ear filled with hearing.
9 AEccl 1:10; 2:12; 3:15; 6:10That which has been is that which will be,
And that which has been done is that which will be done.
So there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one might say,
“See this, it is new”?
Already it has existed for ages
Which were before us.
And also of the 2Lit latter or afterlater things which will occur,
There will be for them no remembrance
Among those who will come 2Lit latter or afterlater still.
The Futility of Wisdom
12 I, the AEccl 1:1; 7:27; 12:8-10Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I AEccl 1:17set my 1Lit heartmind to seek and BEccl 3:10, 11; 7:25; 8:17explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is 2Lit an evila grievous CEccl 2:23, 26; 3:10; 4:8task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with. 14 I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is 1Or futilityAEccl 2:11, 17; 4:4; 6:9vanity and striving after wind. 15 What is AEccl 7:13crooked cannot be straightened and what is lacking cannot be counted.
16 I 1Lit spoke with my heart, sayingsaid to myself, “Behold, I have magnified and increased A1 Kin 3:12; 4:30; 10:23; Eccl 2:9wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my 2Lit heartmind has observed 3Lit an abundancea wealth of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I AEccl 1:13; 7:25set my 1Lit heartmind to know wisdom and to BEccl 2:12; 7:25know madness and folly; I realized that this also is CEccl 1:14; 2:11, 17; 4:4, 6, 16; 6:9striving after wind. 18 Because AEccl 2:23; 12:12in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.
