Sarai and Hagar
Now AGen 11:30Sarai, Abram’s wife had borne him no children, and she had BGen 12:16an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, the Loʀᴅ has prevented me from bearing children. AGen 30:3, 4, 9, 10Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will 1Lit be built from herobtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. After Abram had 1Lit dweltlived AGen 12:4ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight. And Sarai said to Abram, “AJer 51:35May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your 1Lit bosomarms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her 2Lit eyessight. BGen 31:53; Ex 5:21May the Loʀᴅ judge between 3Lit me and youyou and me.” But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your 1Lit handpower; do to her what is good in your 2Lit eyessight.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and AGen 16:9she fled from her presence.
Now AGen 21:17, 18; 22:11, 15; 31:11the angel of the Loʀᴅ found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to BGen 20:1; 25:18Shur. He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, AGen 3:9; 1 Kin 19:9, 13where have you come from and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” Then the angel of the Loʀᴅ said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself 1Lit under her handsto her authority.” 10 Moreover, the AGen 22:15-18angel of the Loʀᴅ said to her, “BGen 17:20I will greatly multiply your 1Lit seeddescendants so that 2Or it shall not be counted for multitudethey will be too many to count.” 11 The angel of the Loʀᴅ said to her further,
“Behold, you are with child,
And you will bear a son;
And you shall call his name 1I.e. God hearsIshmael,
Because AEx 2:23, 24; 3:7, 9the Loʀᴅ 2Lit has heardhas given heed to your affliction.
12 “He will be a AJob 24:5; 39:5-8wild donkey of a man,
His hand will be against everyone,
And everyone’s hand will be against him;
And he will 1Lit dwelllive 2Lit before the face of; or in defiance ofBGen 25:18to the east of all his brothers.”
13 Then she called the name of the Loʀᴅ who spoke to her, “1Or You, God, see meYou are 2Heb El roia God who sees”; for she said, “AGen 32:30; Ps 139:1-12Have I even 3Lit seen here after the one who saw meremained alive here after seeing Him?” 14 Therefore the well was called 1I.e. the well of the living one who sees meBeer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between AGen 14:7Kadesh and Bered.
15 So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was AGen 12:4; 16:3eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to 1Lit Abramhim.
