Babylon Judged for Sins against Israel
Thus says the Loʀᴅ:

And AIs 13:15; 14:19; Jer 49:26; 50:30, 37pierced through in their streets.”

For AIs 54:7, 8; Jer 33:24-26neither Israel nor Judah has been 1Lit widowedforsaken
By his God, the Loʀᴅ of hosts,
Although their land is BHos 4:1, 2full of guilt

AJer 50:8, 28; Rev 18:4Flee from the midst of Babylon,
And each of you save his life!
Do not be 1Or silenced or made lifelessBNum 16:26destroyed in her 2Or penalty for iniquitypunishment,
For this is the CJer 50:15Loʀᴅ’s time of vengeance;
He is going to DJer 25:14render recompense to her.
Babylon has been a golden AJer 25:15; Hab 2:16; Rev 14:8; 17:4cup in the hand of the Loʀᴅ,
Intoxicating all the earth.
The BRev 14:8; 18:3nations have drunk of her wine;
Therefore the nations are CJer 25:16going mad.
Suddenly AIs 21:9; Jer 50:2; Rev 14:8; 18:2Babylon has fallen and been broken;
BIs 13:6; Rev 18:9Wail over her!
CJer 46:11Bring 1Or balsam resinbalm for her pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.
We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
Forsake her and AIs 13:14; Jer 46:16; 50:16let us each go to his own country,
For her judgment has BEzra 9:6; Rev 18:5reached to heaven
And 1Lit is liftedtowers up to the very skies.
10 The Loʀᴅ has APs 37:6; Mic 7:9brought 1Lit forthabout our vindication;
Come and let us BIs 40:2; Jer 50:28recount in Zion
The work of the Loʀᴅ our God!

11 AJer 46:4, 9; Joel 3:9, 10Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
The Loʀᴅ has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes,
Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;
For it is the BJer 50:28vengeance of the Loʀᴅ, vengeance for His temple.
12 AIs 13:2; Jer 50:2; 51:27Lift up a 1Or standardsignal against the walls of Babylon;
Post a strong guard,
Station 2Or watchmensentries,
Place men in ambush!
For the Loʀᴅ has both BJer 4:28; 23:20; 51:29purposed and performed
What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 O you who ARev 17:1dwell by many waters,
Abundant in BIs 45:3treasures,
Your end has come,
The 1Lit cubitmeasure of your 2Lit being cut offCIs 57:17; Hab 2:9-11end.
14 The AJer 49:13Loʀᴅ of hosts has sworn by Himself:
“Surely I will fill you with a 1Or mankindpopulation like BJer 51:27; Nah 3:15locusts,
And they will cry out with 2I.e. like the song of grape treadersshouts of victory over you.”

15 It is AGen 1:1; Jer 10:12-16; 51:15-19He who made the earth by His power,
Who established the world by His wisdom,
And by His understanding He BJob 9:8; Ps 146:5, 6; Jer 32:17; Acts 14:15; Rom 1:20stretched out the heavens.
16 When He utters His AJob 37:2-6; Ps 18:13voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the BPs 135:7; Jer 10:13clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain
And brings forth the CJon 1:4wind from His storehouses.
17 AIs 44:18-20; Jer 10:14All mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his 1Or graven imagesidols,
For his molten images are BHab 2:18, 19deceitful,
And there is no breath in them.
18 They are AJer 18:15worthless, a work of mockery;
In the time of their punishment they will perish.
19 The APs 73:26; Jer 10:16portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the 1Lit FashionerMaker of all is He,
And of the 2Or Scepter; cf Num 24:17tribe of His inheritance;
The BJer 50:34Loʀᴅ of hosts is His name.
20 He says, “You are My 1Lit shattererAIs 10:5; 41:15, 16; Jer 50:23war-club, My weapon of war;
And with you I BIs 8:9; 41:15, 16; Mic 4:12, 13shatter nations,
And with you I destroy kingdoms.
21 “With you I AEx 15:1shatter the horse and his rider,
And with you I shatter the BEx 15:4; Is 43:17chariot and its rider,
22 And with you I shatter A2 Chr 36:17; Is 13:15, 16man and woman,
And with you I shatter old man and BIs 13:18youth,
And with you I shatter young man and virgin,
23 And with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
And with you I shatter the farmer and his team,
And with you I shatter governors and prefects.
24 “But I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of AJer 50:10Chaldea for BJer 50:15, 29all their evil that they have done in Zion before your eyes,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
25 “Behold, AJer 50:31I am against you, BIs 13:2; Zech 4:7O destroying mountain,
Who destroys the whole earth,” declares the Loʀᴅ,
“And I will stretch out My hand against you,
And roll you down from the crags,
And I will make you a CRev 8:8burnt out mountain.
26 “They will not take from you even a stone for a corner
Nor a stone for foundations,
But you will be AIs 13:19-22; Jer 50:13; 51:29desolate forever,” declares the Loʀᴅ.

27 AIs 13:2-5; 18:3; Jer 50:2; 51:12Lift up a 1Or standardsignal in the land,
Blow a trumpet among the nations!
Consecrate the nations against her,

29 So the AJer 8:16; 10:10; 50:46; Amos 8:8land quakes and writhes,
For the purposes of the Loʀᴅ against Babylon stand,
To make the land of Babylon
1Or An object of horrorA BIs 13:19, 20; 47:11; Jer 50:13; 51:26, 43desolation without inhabitants.
30 The APs 76:5; Jer 50:15, 36, 37mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting,
They stay in the strongholds;
BIs 13:7, 8; Nah 3:13Their strength is 1Lit dried upexhausted,
They are becoming BIs 13:7, 8; Nah 3:13like women;
Their dwelling places are set on fire,
The CIs 45:1, 2; Lam 2:9; Amos 1:5; Nah 3:13bars of her gates are broken.
31 One 1Lit runnerA2 Chr 30:6courier runs to meet 1Lit runneranother,
And one 2Lit announcerB2 Sam 18:19-31messenger to meet 2Lit announceranother,
To tell the king of Babylon
That his city has been captured from end to end;
32 The fords also have been seized,
And they have burned the marshes with fire,
And the men of war are terrified.

33 For thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel:
“The daughter of Babylon is like a AIs 21:10; 41:15, 16; Mic 4:13threshing floor
At the time 1Lit of treading itit is stamped firm;
Yet in a little while the time of BIs 17:5; Hos 6:11; Joel 3:13; Rev 14:15harvest will come for her.”

34 “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has AJer 50:17devoured me and crushed me,
He has set me down like an BIs 24:1-3empty vessel;
He has CJob 20:15; Jer 51:44swallowed me like a monster,
He has filled his stomach with my delicacies;
He has washed me away.
35 “May the APs 137:8violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,”
The 1Lit inhabitressinhabitant of Zion will say;
And, “May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
Jerusalem will say.
36 Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“Behold, I am going to APs 140:12plead your case
And BJer 51:6, 11; Rom 12:19exact full vengeance for you;
And CJer 50:38I will dry up her 1Or broad riversea
And make her fountain dry.
37 ARev 18:2Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals,
An BJer 25:9object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.
38 “They will roar together like AJer 2:15young lions,
They will growl like lions’ cubs.
39 “When they become heated up, I will serve them their banquet
And AJer 25:27; 48:26; 51:57make them drunk, that they may become jubilant
And may BPs 76:5sleep a perpetual sleep
And not wake up,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
40 “I will bring them down like 1Or young ramslambs AJer 48:15; 50:27to the slaughter,
Like rams together with male goats.

41 “How 1Cryptic name for BabylonAJer 25:26Sheshak has been captured,
And BJer 49:25the praise of the whole earth been seized!
How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations!
42 “The 1Or broad riverAIs 8:7, 8; Jer 51:55; Dan 9:26sea has come up over Babylon;
She has been engulfed with its tumultuous waves.
43 “Her cities have become an AJer 50:12object of horror,
A parched land and a desert,
A land in which BIs 13:20; Jer 2:6no man lives
And through which no son of man passes.
44 AIs 46:1; Jer 50:2I will punish Bel in Babylon,
And I will make what he has swallowed BEzra 1:7, 8come out of his mouth;
And the nations will no longer CIs 2:2stream to him.
Even the DJer 50:15; 51:58wall of Babylon has fallen down!

45 AIs 48:20; Jer 50:8, 28; 51:6; Rev 18:4Come forth from her midst, My people,
And each of you BGen 19:12-16; Acts 2:40save yourselves

46 “Now AIs 43:5; Jer 46:27, 28so that your heart does not grow faint,

For the report will come 1Lit in theone year,
And after that 2Lit theanother report in 2Lit theanother year,

47 Therefore behold, days are coming
When I will punish the AIs 21:9; 46:1, 2; Jer 50:2; 51:52idols of Babylon;
And her whole land will be BJer 50:12, 35-37put to shame
And all her slain will fall in her midst.
48 “Then AIs 44:23; 48:20; 49:13; Rev 18:20heaven and earth and all that is in them

For BJer 50:3the destroyers will come to her from the north,”
Declares the Loʀᴅ.

49 APs 137:8; Jer 50:29Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel,
As also for Babylon BRev 18:24the slain of all the earth have fallen.
50 You AJer 44:28who have escaped the sword,
Depart! Do not stay!
BDeut 4:29-31; Ps 137:6Remember the Loʀᴅ from afar,
And let Jerusalem 1Lit come upon your heartcome to your mind.
51 APs 44:15We are ashamed because we have heard reproach;
Disgrace has covered our faces,
For BPs 74:3-8; Lam 1:10aliens have entered

52 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Loʀᴅ,
“When I will punish her AJer 50:38idols,
And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.
53 “Though Babylon should AGen 11:4; Job 20:6; Ps 139:8-10; Is 14:12-14; Jer 49:16; Amos 9:2; Obad 4ascend to the heavens,

54 The AJer 48:3-5; 50:22, 46sound of an outcry from Babylon,
And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55 For the Loʀᴅ is going to destroy Babylon,

That they may sleep a BPs 76:5, 6perpetual sleep and not wake up,”
CJer 46:18; 48:15Declares the King, whose name is the Loʀᴅ of hosts.
58 Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts,
“The broad AJer 50:15wall of Babylon will be completely razed

So the peoples will CHab 2:13toil for nothing,

59 The 1Lit wordmessage which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of AJer 32:12; 36:4; 45:1Neriah, the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with BJer 28:1; 52:1Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. (Now Seraiah was quartermaster.) 60 So Jeremiah AIs 30:8; Jer 30:2, 3; 36:2, 4, 32wrote in a single 1Or bookscroll all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. 61 Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud, 62 and say, ‘You, O Loʀᴅ, have 1Lit spokenpromised concerning this place to AIs 13:19-22; 14:22, 23; Jer 50:3, 13, 39, 40cut it off, so that there will be BJer 51:43; Ezek 35:9nothing dwelling in it, 2Lit from man even to beastwhether man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.’ 63  “And as soon as you finish reading this 1Or bookscroll, you will tie a stone to it and AJer 19:10, 11; Rev 18:21throw it into the middle of the Euphrates, 64 and say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and ANah 1:8, 9not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become BJer 51:58exhausted.’ ” CJob 31:40; Ps 72:20Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
