The Doom of Sodom
Now the AGen 18:2, 22two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When BGen 18:2-5Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and 1Lit bowed himselfbowed down with his face to the ground. And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the square.” Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; AGen 18:6-8and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Before they lay down, AGen 13:13; 18:20the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people 1Or without exception; lit from every endfrom every quarter; and they called to Lot and said to him, “ALev 18:22; Judg 19:22Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may 1I.e. have intercoursehave relations with them.” But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.  “Now behold, AJudg 19:24I have two daughters who have not 1I.e. had intercoursehad relations with man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them 2Lit as is good in your sightwhatever you like; only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the 3Lit shadowshelter of my roof.” But they said, “Stand aside.” Furthermore, they said, “This one came in 1Lit to sojournas an alien, and already AEx 2:14he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them.” So they pressed hard against 2Lit the man, against LotLot and came near to break the door. 10 But AGen 19:1the men reached out their 1Lit handhands and brought Lot into the house 2Lit towith them, and shut the door. 11 ADeut 28:28, 29; 2 Kin 6:18; Acts 13:11They 1Lit smotestruck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the doorway.
12 Then the two men said to Lot, “Whom else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place; 13 for we are about to destroy this place, because AGen 18:20their outcry has become so great before the Loʀᴅ that BLev 26:30-33; Deut 4:26; 28:45; 1 Chr 21:15the Loʀᴅ has sent us to destroy it.” 14 Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who 1Or had married; lit were takingwere to marry his daughters, and said, “Up, ANum 16:21, 45; Rev 18:4get out of this place, for the Loʀᴅ will destroy the city.” BJer 43:1, 2But he appeared to his sons-in-law 2Lit like one who was jestingto be jesting.
15 When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the 1Or iniquitypunishment of the city.” 16 But he hesitated. So the men ADeut 5:15; 6:21; 7:8; 2 Pet 2:7seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the 1Lit handhands of his two daughters, for BEx 34:7; Ps 32:10; 33:18, 19the compassion of the Loʀᴅ was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city. 17 When they had brought them outside, 1Lit heone said, “AJer 48:6Escape for your life! BGen 19:26Do not look behind you, and do not stay 2Lit in all the circleanywhere in the CGen 13:10valley; escape to DGen 14:10the 3Lit mountainmountains, or you will be swept away.” 18 But Lot said to them, “Oh no, my lords! 19  “Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your lovingkindness, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the 1Lit mountainmountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die; 20 now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) 1Lit and my soul will livethat my life may be saved.” 21 He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this 1Lit thingrequest also, not to overthrow the town of which you have spoken. 22  “Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the town was called 1I.e. smallAGen 13:10; 14:2Zoar.
23 The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the Loʀᴅ ADeut 29:23; Ps 11:6; Is 13:19; Ezek 16:49, 50; Luke 17:29; Jude 7rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Loʀᴅ out of heaven, 25 and ADeut 29:23; Ps 107:34; Is 13:19; Lam 4:6; 2 Pet 2:6He overthrew those cities, and all the 1Lit circlevalley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife, from behind him, AGen 19:17; Luke 17:32looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to AGen 18:22the place where he had stood before the Loʀᴅ; 28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the 1Lit circlevalley, and he saw, and behold, ARev 9:2; 18:9the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a 2Lit kilnfurnace.
29 Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the 1Lit circlevalley, that ADeut 7:8; 9:5, 27God remembered Abraham, and B2 Pet 2:7sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.
Lot Is Debased
30 Lot went up from Zoar, and 1Lit dweltAGen 19:17, 19stayed in the 2Lit mountainmountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to 3Lit dwellstay in Zoar; and he 1Lit dweltstayed in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man 1Or in the landon earth to AGen 16:2, 4; 38:8; Deut 25:5come in to us after the manner of the earth. 32  “Come, ALuke 21:34let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve 1Lit seed from our fatherour family through our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34 On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve 1Lit seed from our fatherour family through our father.” 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son, and called his name ADeut 2:9Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 As for the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the 1Heb Bene-Ammonsons of ADeut 2:19Ammon to this day.
