1 But as soon as Jeremiah, whom the Loʀᴅ their God had sent, had AJer 26:8; 51:63finished telling all the people all the words of the Loʀᴅ their God—that is, all these words— 2 Azariah the AJer 42:1son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are B2 Chr 36:13; Is 7:9; Jer 5:12, 13; 42:5telling a lie! The Loʀᴅ our God has not sent you to say, ‘You are not to enter Egypt to reside there’; 3 but AJer 36:4, 10, 26, 32; 43:6; 45:1-3Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans, so they will put us to death or exile us to Babylon.” 4 So AJer 42:8Johanan the son of Kareah and all the 1Or princescommanders of the forces, and all the people, B2 Chr 25:16; Jer 42:5, 6; 44:5did not obey the voice of the Loʀᴅ to CPs 37:3; Jer 42:10-12stay in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the 1Or princescommanders of the forces took the AJer 40:11entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been driven away, in order to reside in the land of Judah— 6 the men, the women, the 1Lit infantschildren, the AJer 41:10king’s daughters and BJer 39:10; 40:7every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam 2Lit the sonand grandson of Shaphan, together with CEccl 9:1, 2; Lam 3:1Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah— 7 and they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Loʀᴅ) and went in as far as AJer 2:16; 44:1Tahpanhes.

8 Then the word of the Loʀᴅ came to Jeremiah in AJer 2:16; 44:1; 46:14; Ezek 30:18Tahpanhes, saying, 9 “Take some large stones in your 1Lit handhands and hide them in the mortar in the 2Or brickworkbrick terrace which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s 3Lit housepalace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of 4Lit mensome of the Jews; 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get AJer 25:9, 11Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, BIs 44:28; 45:1; Jer 25:9; 27:6My servant, and I am going to set his throne right over these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his CPs 18:11; 27:5; 31:20canopy over them. 11  “He will also come and AIs 19:1-25; Jer 25:15-19; 44:13; 46:1, 2, 13-26; Ezek 29:19, 20strike the land of Egypt; those who are meant for death will be given over to death, and those for captivity to captivity, and BJer 15:2those for the sword to the sword. 12  “And 1Some ancient versions read He will setI shall set fire to the temples of the AEx 12:12; Is 19:1; Jer 46:25; Ezek 30:13gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. So he will BPs 104:2; 109:18, 19; Is 49:18wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will depart from there safely. 13  “He will also shatter the 1Or stone pillarsobelisks of 2Heb Beth-shemesh; i.e. the house of the sun-godHeliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.” ’ ”
