Cities of Judah Warned
In the beginning of the reign of A2 Kin 23:36; 2 Chr 36:4, 5Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Loʀᴅ, saying, “Thus says the Loʀᴅ, ‘A2 Chr 24:20, 21; Jer 7:2; 19:14Stand in the court of the Loʀᴅ’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah who have BDeut 12:5come to worship in the Loʀᴅ’s house CJer 1:17; 42:4; Matt 28:20; Acts 20:20, 27all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them. DDeut 4:2Do not omit a word!  ‘AIs 1:16-19; Jer 36:3-7Perhaps they will listen and everyone will turn from his evil way, that BJer 18:8; Jon 3:8I may repent of the calamity which I am planning to do to them because of the evil of their deeds.’  “And you will say to them, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “ALev 26:14; 1 Kin 9:6; Is 1:20; Jer 17:27; 22:5If you will not listen to Me, to BJer 32:23; 44:10, 23walk in My law which I have set before you, to listen to the words of A2 Kin 9:7; Ezra 9:11; Jer 7:13; 25:3, 4My servants the prophets, whom I have been sending to you 1Lit rising early and sendingagain and again, but you have not listened; then I will make this house like AJosh 18:1; 1 Sam 4:12; Ps 78:60, 61; Jer 7:12, 14Shiloh, and this city I will make a B2 Kin 22:19; Is 65:15; Jer 24:9; 25:18curse to all the nations of the earth.” ’ ”
A Plot to Murder Jeremiah
The AJer 5:31; Mic 3:11priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Loʀᴅ. When Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Loʀᴅ had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “AJer 11:19; 18:23; Lam 4:13, 14; Matt 21:35, 36; 23:34, 35; 27:20You must die!  “Why have you prophesied in the name of the Loʀᴅ saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh and this city will be AJer 9:11; 33:10desolate, without inhabitant’?” And BActs 3:11; 5:12all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of the Loʀᴅ.
10 When the AJer 26:21officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Loʀᴅ and sat in the BJer 36:10entrance of the New Gate of the Loʀᴅ’s house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets AJer 18:23spoke to the officials and to all the people, saying, “A BDeut 18:20; Matt 26:66death sentence for this man! For he has prophesied CJer 38:4; Acts 6:11-14against this city as you have heard in your hearing.”
12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and to all the people, saying, “AJer 1:17, 18; 26:15; Amos 7:15; Acts 4:19; 5:29The Loʀᴅ sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. 13  “Now therefore AJer 7:3, 5; 18:8, 11; 26:3; 35:15; Joel 2:14; Jon 3:9; 4:2amend your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the Loʀᴅ your God; and the Loʀᴅ will 1Lit be sorry forchange His mind about the misfortune which He has pronounced against you. 14  “But as for me, behold, AJer 38:5I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your sight. 15  “Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring ANum 35:33; Prov 6:16, 17; Jer 7:6innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city and on its inhabitants; for truly the Loʀᴅ has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
Jeremiah Is Spared
16 Then the officials and all the people AJer 26:11; 36:19, 25; 38:7, 13said to the priests and to the prophets, “No BActs 5:34-39; 23:9, 29; 25:25; 26:31death sentence for this man! For he has spoken to us in the name of the Loʀᴅ our God.” 17 Then AActs 5:34some of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying, 18 1Lit Micaiah the MorasthiteAMic 1:1Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘Thus the Loʀᴅ of hosts has said,
BNeh 4:2; Ps 79:1; Jer 9:11; Mic 3:12Zion will be plowed as a field,
And Jerusalem will become ruins,
And the CIs 2:2, 3; Jer 17:3; Mic 4:1; Zech 8:3mountain of the house as the 2Or a wooded heighthigh places of a forest.” ’
19  “Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not A2 Chr 29:6-11; 32:26; Is 37:1, 4, 15-20fear the Loʀᴅ and entreat the favor of the Loʀᴅ, and BEx 32:14; 2 Sam 24:16the Loʀᴅ 1Lit was sorry forchanged His mind about the misfortune which He had pronounced against them? But we are CJer 44:7; Hab 2:10committing a great evil against ourselves.”
20 Indeed, there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Loʀᴅ, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from AJosh 9:17; 1 Sam 6:21; 7:2Kiriath-jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land words similar to all those of Jeremiah. 21 When King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and all the officials heard his words, then the A2 Chr 16:10; 24:21; Jer 36:26; Matt 14:5king sought to put him to death; but Uriah heard it, and he was afraid and B1 Kin 19:2-4; Matt 10:23fled and went to Egypt. 22 Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: AJer 36:12Elnathan the son of Achbor and certain men with him went into Egypt. 23 And they brought Uriah from Egypt and led him to King Jehoiakim, who AJer 2:30slew him with a sword and cast his dead body into the 1Lit gravesburial place of the 2Lit sons of the peoplecommon people.
24 But the hand of A2 Kin 22:12-14; Jer 39:14; 40:5-7Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he was B1 Kin 18:4; Jer 1:18, 19not given into the hands of the people to put him to death.
