And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s 3Or shearingsmowing. 2 And it came about, 1Lit ifwhen it had AEx 10:15finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,

4 Thus the Lord Goᴅ showed me, and behold, the Lord Goᴅ was calling to contend with them by ADeut 32:22; Is 66:15, 16; Amos 2:5fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the 1Lit portionfarm land. 5 Then I said,

7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing 1Or uponby a 2Lit wall of a plumb linevertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. 8 The Loʀᴅ said to me, “AJer 1:11; Amos 8:2What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,

10 Then Amaziah, the A1 Kin 12:31, 32; 13:33priest of Bethel, sent word to B2 Kin 14:23, 24Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has CJer 26:8-11; 38:4conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11  “For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “AMatt 8:34Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying! 13  “But AAmos 2:12; Acts 4:18no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a B1 Kin 12:29, 32; Amos 7:9sanctuary of the king and a royal 1Lit houseresidence.”

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the A1 Kin 20:35; 2 Kin 2:3, 5; 4:38; 2 Chr 19:2son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a 1Or nippergrower of sycamore figs. 15  “But the Loʀᴅ took me from 1Lit behindfollowing the flock and the Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘Go AJer 1:7; Ezek 2:3, 4prophesy to My people Israel.’ 16  “Now hear the word of the Loʀᴅ: you are saying, ‘You AAmos 2:12; 7:13shall not prophesy against Israel BDeut 32:2; Ezek 20:46; 21:2nor shall you 1Lit flowspeak against the house of Isaac.’ 17  “Therefore, thus says the Loʀᴅ, ‘Your AHos 4:13, 14wife will become a harlot in the city, your BJer 14:16sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die 1Or in an unclean landupon C2 Kin 17:6; Ezek 4:13; Hos 9:3unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”
