Ephraim’s Captivity Predicted
Woe to the proud crown of the AIs 28:7; Hos 7:5drunkards of BIs 9:9Ephraim,
And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the 1Lit valley of fatnessfertile valley
Of those who are 2Lit smittenovercome with wine!
Behold, the Lord has a strong and AIs 8:7; 40:10mighty agent;
As a storm of BIs 28:17; 30:30; 32:19; Ezek 13:11hail, a tempest of destruction,
Like a storm of CIs 8:6, 7; 30:28; Nah 1:8mighty overflowing waters,
He has cast it down to the earth with His hand.
The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim is AIs 26:6; 28:18trodden under foot.
And the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the 1Lit valley of fatnessfertile valley,
Will be like the AHos 9:10; Mic 7:1; Nah 3:12first-ripe fig prior to summer,
Which 2Lit the one seeing seesone sees,
And 3Lit while it is yetas soon as it is in his 4Lit palmhand,
He swallows it.
In that day the AIs 41:16; 45:25; 60:1, 19Loʀᴅ of hosts will become a beautiful BIs 62:3crown
And a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people;
A A1 Kin 3:28; Is 11:2; 32:15, 16; John 5:30spirit of justice for him who sits in judgment,
A B2 Chr 32:6-8; Is 25:4strength to those who repel the 1Lit battleonslaught at the gate.
And these also AIs 5:11, 22; 22:13; 56:12; Hos 4:11reel with wine and stagger from strong drink:
BIs 24:2The priest and CIs 9:15the prophet reel with strong drink,
They are confused by wine, they stagger from DHab 2:15, 16strong drink;
They reel while 1Lit seeinghaving EIs 29:11visions,
They totter when rendering judgment.
For all the tables are full of filthy AJer 48:26vomit, without a single clean place.

“To AIs 2:3; 28:26; 30:20; 48:17; 50:4; 54:13whom would He teach knowledge,
And to whom would He interpret the message?
Those just BPs 131:2weaned from milk?
Those just taken from the breast?
10 “For He says,
1Heb Sav lasav, sav lasav, Kav lakav, kav lakav, Ze’ er sham, ze’ er sham These Hebrew monosyllables, imitating the babbling of a child, mock the prophet’s preachingA2 Chr 36:15; Neh 9:30Order on order, order on order,
Line on line, line on line,
A little here, a little there.’ ”
11 Indeed, He will speak to this people
Through AIs 33:19; 1 Cor 14:21stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
12 He who said to them, “Here is AIs 11:10; 30:15; 32:17, 18; Jer 6:16; Matt 11:28, 29rest, give rest to the weary,”
And, “Here is repose,” but they would not listen.
13 So the word of the Loʀᴅ to them will be,
1V 10, note 1 The Loʀᴅ responds to their scoffing by imitating their mockery, to represent the unintelligible language of a conquerorOrder on order, order on order,
Line on line, line on line,
A little here, a little there,”
That they may go and AIs 8:15; Matt 21:44stumble backward, be broken, snared and taken captive.
Judah Is Warned
14 Therefore, AIs 1:10; 28:22hear the word of the Loʀᴅ, O BIs 29:20scoffers,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
15 Because you have said, “We have made a AIs 28:18covenant with death,
And with 1I.e. the nether worldSheol we have made a 2So some ancient versions; Heb seerpact.
BIs 8:8; 28:2; 30:28; Dan 11:22The overwhelming 3Or floodscourge will not reach us when it passes by,
For we have made CIs 9:15; 30:9; 44:20; 59:3, 4; Ezek 13:22falsehood our refuge and we have DIs 29:15concealed ourselves with deception.”
16 Therefore thus says the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ,
ARom 9:33; 10:11; 1 Pet 2:6Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested BPs 118:22; Is 8:14, 15; Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; Eph 2:20stone,
A costly cornerstone for the foundation, 2Lit well-laidfirmly placed.
He who believes in it will not be 3Lit in a hurrydisturbed.
17 “I will make A2 Kin 21:13; Is 5:16; 30:18; 61:8; Amos 7:7-9justice the measuring line
And righteousness the level;
Then BIs 28:2hail will sweep away the refuge of lies
And the waters will overflow the secret place.
18 “Your AIs 28:15covenant with death will be 1Lit covered overBIs 7:7; 8:10canceled,
And your pact with Sheol will not stand;
When the AIs 28:15overwhelming scourge passes through,
Then you become its CIs 28:3; Dan 8:13trampling place.
19 “As A2 Kin 24:2often as it passes through, it will 1Lit takeseize you;
For BIs 50:4morning after morning it will pass through, anytime during the day or night,
And it will be 2Lit onlysheer CJob 6:4; 18:11; 24:17; Ps 55:4; 88:15; Lam 2:22terror to understand 3Lit the report, or, the messagewhat it means.”
20 The bed is too short on which to stretch out,
And the AIs 59:6blanket is too 1Lit narrowsmall to wrap oneself in.
21 For the Loʀᴅ will rise up as at Mount A2 Sam 5:20; 1 Chr 14:11Perazim,
He will be stirred up as in the valley of BJosh 10:10, 12; 2 Sam 5:25; 1 Chr 14:16Gibeon,
To do His CIs 10:12; 29:14; 65:7task, His 1Lit task is strangeDLam 2:15; 3:33; Luke 19:41-44unusual task,
And to work His work, His 2Lit work is alienextraordinary work.
22 And now do not carry on as AIs 28:14scoffers,
Or your fetters will be made stronger;
For I have heard from the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts
Of decisive BIs 10:22, 23destruction on all the earth.

23 Give ear and hear my voice,
Listen and hear my words.
24 Does the 1Lit plowmanfarmer plow 2Lit all daycontinually to plant seed?
Does he continually 3Lit openturn and harrow the ground?
25 Does he not level its surface
And sow dill and scatter AMatt 23:23cummin
And 1Lit putplant BEx 9:32wheat in rows,
Barley in its place and rye within its 2Lit regionarea?
26 For his God instructs and teaches him properly.
27 For dill is not threshed with a AAmos 1:3threshing sledge,
Nor is the cartwheel 1Lit rolleddriven over cummin;
But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cummin with a club.
28 Grain for bread is crushed,
Indeed, he does not continue to thresh it forever.
Because the wheel of his cart and his horses eventually 1Lit discomfitdamage it,
He does not thresh it longer.
29 This also comes from the Loʀᴅ of hosts,
Who has made His counsel AIs 9:6wonderful and His wisdom BIs 31:2; Rom 11:33great.
