David King over All Israel
A1 Chr 11:1-3Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and 1Lit said, sayingsaid, “Behold, we are B2 Sam 19:13your bone and your flesh.  “Previously, when Saul was king over us, A1 Sam 18:5, 13, 16you were the one who led Israel out and in. And the Loʀᴅ said to you, ‘BGen 49:24; 2 Sam 7:7You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be C1 Sam 25:30a ruler over Israel.’ ” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David A2 Sam 3:21made a covenant with them before the Loʀᴅ at Hebron; then B1 Sam 16:13; 2 Sam 2:4they anointed David king over Israel. David was AGen 41:46; Num 4:3; Luke 3:23thirty years old when he became king, and B1 Kin 2:11; 1 Chr 26:31he reigned forty years. At Hebron A2 Sam 2:11; 1 Chr 3:4; 29:27he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
A1 Chr 11:4-9Now the king and his men went to BJosh 15:63; 18:28; Judg 1:21Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, and they said to 1Lit David, sayingDavid, “You shall not come in here, but the blind and lame will turn you away”; 2Lit sayingthinking, “David cannot enter here.” Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is A2 Sam 6:12, 16; 1 Kin 2:10; 9:24the city of David. David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him reach the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul, through the water tunnel.” Therefore they say, “The blind or the lame shall not come into the house.” So David lived in the stronghold and called it A2 Sam 5:7the city of David. And David built all around from the 1I.e. citadelB1 Kin 9:15, 24Millo and inward. 10 A2 Sam 3:1David became greater and greater, for the Loʀᴅ God of hosts was with him.
11 A1 Kin 5:1, 10, 18; 1 Chr 14:1Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and carpenters and stonemasons; and BPs 30: titlethey built a house for David. 12 And David realized that the Loʀᴅ had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13 Meanwhile ADeut 17:17; 1 Chr 3:9David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 Now A1 Chr 3:5-8these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
War with the Philistines
17 When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, A1 Sam 29:1all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the B2 Sam 23:14; 1 Chr 11:16stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines came and spread themselves out in AGen 14:5; Josh 15:8; 17:15; 18:16the valley of Rephaim. 19 Then A1 Sam 23:2David inquired of the Loʀᴅ, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?” And B2 Sam 2:1the Loʀᴅ said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 So David came to A1 Chr 14:11; Is 28:21Baal-perazim and 1Lit David smotedefeated them there; and he said, “The Loʀᴅ has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place 2I.e. the master of breakthroughBaal-perazim. 21 They abandoned their idols there, so A1 Chr 14:12David and his men carried them away.
22 Now A2 Sam 5:18the Philistines came up once again and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim. 23 When A2 Sam 5:19David inquired of the Loʀᴅ, He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the 1Or baka-shrubsbalsam trees. 24  “It shall be, when A2 Kin 7:6you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the 1Or baka-shrubsbalsam trees, then you shall act promptly, for then BJudg 4:14the Loʀᴅ will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 25 Then David did so, just as the Loʀᴅ had commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from 1In 1 Chr 14:16, GibeonAIs 28:21Geba 2Lit until you are coming toas far as BJosh 12:12; 21:21Gezer.
