1 He ALuke 18:35entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. 3 Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a 1I.e. fig-mulberryA1 Kin 10:27; 1 Chr 27:28; 2 Chr 1:15; 9:27; Ps 78:47; Is 9:10; Luke 17:6sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. 5 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 And he hurried and came down and received Him 1Lit rejoicinggladly. 7 When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, “He has gone 1Or to find lodgingto be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 Zaccheus stopped and said to ALuke 7:13the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I 1Lit am givingwill give to the poor, and if I have BLuke 3:14defrauded anyone of anything, I 1Lit am givingwill give back CEx 22:1; Lev 6:5; Num 5:7; 2 Sam 12:6four times as much.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is ALuke 3:8; 13:16; Rom 4:16; Gal 3:7a son of Abraham. 10  “For AMatt 18:11the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

11 While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because ALuke 9:51He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that BLuke 17:20the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, “AMatt 25:14-30; Luke 19:12-27A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13  “And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten 1A mina is equal to about 100 days’ wagesminas and said to them, ‘Do business with this 2Lit while I am cominguntil I come back.’ 14  “But his citizens hated him and sent 1Or an embassya delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15  “When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. 16  “The first appeared, saying, ‘1Lit LordMaster, your 2V 13, note 1mina has made ten minas more.’ 17  “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been ALuke 16:10faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’ 18  “The second came, saying, ‘Your 1V 13, note 1mina, 2Lit lordmaster, has made five minas.’ 19  “And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20  “Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’ 22  “He *said to him, ‘1Lit Out of your own mouthBy your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23  ‘Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24  “Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25  “And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’ 26 ‘AMatt 13:12; Mark 4:25; Luke 8:18I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27  ‘But ALuke 19:14these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and BMatt 22:7; Luke 20:16slay them in my presence.’ ”

28 After He had said these things, He AMark 10:32was going on ahead, BLuke 9:51going up to Jerusalem.

29 ALuke 19:29-38: Matt 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-10When He approached Bethphage and BMatt 21:17Bethany, near the 1Or hill...Olive Grove; Mount of Olivesmount that is called CLuke 21:37; Acts 1:12Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31  “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its 1Lit lordsowners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, ALuke 19:35-38: Matt 21:4-9; Mark 11:7-10; John 12:12-15and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. 37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of AMatt 21:1; Luke 19:29the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to BLuke 18:43praise God 1Lit rejoicingjoyfully with a loud voice for all the 2Or works of powermiracles which they had seen, 38 shouting:

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and ALuke 13:34, 35wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43  “For the days will come upon you 1Lit andwhen your enemies will AEccl 9:14; Is 29:3; 37:33; Jer 6:6; Ezek 4:2; 26:8throw up a 2I.e. a dirt wall or mound for siege purposesbarricade against you, and BLuke 21:20surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and AMatt 24:2; Mark 13:2; Luke 21:6they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize B1 Pet 2:12the time of your visitation.”

45 ALuke 19:45, 46: Matt 21:12, 13; Mark 11:15-17;John 2:13-16Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘AIs 56:7; Jer 7:11; Matt 21:13; Mark 11:17Aɴᴅ Mʏ ʜoᴜsᴇ sʜᴀʟʟ ʙᴇ ᴀ ʜoᴜsᴇ oꜰ ᴘʀᴀʏᴇʀ,’ BJer 7:11but you have made it a ʀoʙʙᴇʀs’ 1Lit caveᴅᴇɴ.”

47 And AMatt 26:55; Luke 21:37He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people BLuke 20:19were trying to destroy Him, 48 and they could not find 1Lit what they would doanything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to 2Lit Him, listeningevery word He said.
