Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament
What then shall we say that Abraham, 1Or our forefather, has found according to the fleshour forefather ARom 1:3according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified 1Lit out ofby works, he has something to boast about, but A1 Cor 1:31not 2Lit towardbefore God. For what does the Scripture say? “AGen 15:6; Rom 4:9, 22; Gal 3:6; James 2:23Aʙʀᴀʜᴀᴍ ʙᴇʟɪᴇvᴇᴅ Goᴅ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴛ wᴀs cʀᴇᴅɪᴛᴇᴅ ᴛo ʜɪᴍ ᴀs ʀɪɢʜᴛᴇoᴜsɴᴇss.” Now to the one who ARom 11:6works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but AJohn 6:29; Rom 3:22believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
APs 32:1Bʟᴇssᴇᴅ ᴀʀᴇ ᴛʜosᴇ wʜosᴇ ʟᴀwʟᴇss ᴅᴇᴇᴅs ʜᴀvᴇ ʙᴇᴇɴ ꜰoʀɢɪvᴇɴ,
Aɴᴅ wʜosᴇ sɪɴs ʜᴀvᴇ ʙᴇᴇɴ covᴇʀᴇᴅ.
APs 32:2Bʟᴇssᴇᴅ ɪs ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴀɴ wʜosᴇ sɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ Loʀᴅ wɪʟʟ ɴoᴛ B2 Cor 5:19ᴛᴀᴋᴇ ɪɴᴛo ᴀccoᴜɴᴛ.”
Is this blessing then on 1Lit circumcisionARom 3:30the circumcised, or on 2Lit uncircumcisionthe uncircumcised also? For BRom 4:3we say, “CGen 15:6Fᴀɪᴛʜ wᴀs cʀᴇᴅɪᴛᴇᴅ ᴛo Aʙʀᴀʜᴀᴍ ᴀs ʀɪɢʜᴛᴇoᴜsɴᴇss.” 10 How then was it credited? While he was 1Lit in circumcisioncircumcised, or 2Lit in uncircumcisionuncircumcised? Not while 1Lit in circumcisioncircumcised, but while 2Lit in uncircumcisionuncircumcised; 11 and he AGen 17:10freceived the sign of circumcision, BJohn 3:33a seal of the righteousness of the faith which 1Lit was in uncircumcisionhe had while uncircumcised, so that he might be CLuke 19:9; Rom 4:16fthe father of DRom 3:22; 4:16all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which 1Lit was in uncircumcisionhe had while uncircumcised.
13 For ARom 9:8; Gal 3:16, 29the promise to Abraham or to his 1Lit seeddescendants BGen 17:4-6; 22:17fthat he would be heir of the world was not 2Or through lawthrough the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For AGal 3:18if those who are 1Or of lawof the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for ARom 7:7, 10-25; 1 Cor 15:56; Gal 3:10the Law brings about wrath, but BRom 3:20where there is no law, there also is no violation.
16 For this reason it is 1Or out ofby faith, in order that it may be in accordance with ARom 3:24grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to BRom 4:11; 9:8; 15:8all the 2Lit seeddescendants, not only to 3Lit that which isthose who are of the Law, but also to 3Lit that which isCGal 3:7those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is DLuke 19:9; Rom 4:11the father of us all, 17 (as it is written, “AGen 17:5A ꜰᴀᴛʜᴇʀ oꜰ ᴍᴀɴʏ ɴᴀᴛɪoɴs ʜᴀvᴇ I ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ʏoᴜ”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, BJohn 5:21who gives life to the dead and 1Lit calls the things which do not exist as existingCIs 48:13; 51:2calls into being D1 Cor 1:28that which does not exist. 18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become ARom 4:17a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “BGen 15:5So sʜᴀʟʟ ʏoᴜʀ 1Lit seedᴅᴇscᴇɴᴅᴀɴᴛs ʙᴇ.” 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now AHeb 11:12as good as dead since BGen 17:17he was about a hundred years old, and CGen 18:11the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, AMatt 9:8giving glory to God, 21 and ARom 14:5being fully assured that BGen 18:14; Heb 11:19what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 Therefore AGen 15:6; Rom 4:3ɪᴛ wᴀs ᴀʟso cʀᴇᴅɪᴛᴇᴅ ᴛo ʜɪᴍ ᴀs ʀɪɢʜᴛᴇoᴜsɴᴇss. 23 Now ARom 15:4; 1 Cor 9:9f; 10:11; 2 Tim 3:16fnot for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those ARom 10:9; 1 Pet 1:21who believe in Him who BActs 2:24raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was AIs 53:4, 5; Rom 5:6, 8; 8:32; Gal 2:20; Eph 5:2delivered over because of our transgressions, and was BRom 5:18; 1 Cor 15:17; 2 Cor 5:15raised because of our justification.
