1 After these things AJohn 6:1-13: Matt 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17Jesus went away to the other side of BMatt 4:18; Luke 5:1the Sea of Galilee (or CJohn 6:23; 21:1Tiberias). 2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the 1Or attesting miraclesAJohn 2:11, 23; 3:2; 6:14, 30; 11:47; 12:18, 37; 20:30signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 Then AMatt 5:1; Mark 3:13; Luke 6:12; 9:28; John 6:15Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. 4 Now ADeut 16:1; John 2:13the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to AJohn 1:43Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” 6 This He was saying to A2 Cor 13:5; Rev 2:2test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7 AJohn 1:43Philip answered Him, “BMark 6:37Two hundred 1The denarius was equivalent to a day’s wagesdenarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” 8 One of His AJohn 2:2disciples, BJohn 1:40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two AJohn 6:11; 21:9, 10, 13fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people 1Lit recline(d)sit down.” Now there was AMark 6:39much grass in the place. So the men 1Lit recline(d)sat down, in number about BMatt 14:21five thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and AMatt 15:36; John 6:23having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the BJohn 6:9; 21:9, 10, 13fish as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, He *said to His AJohn 2:2disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve AMatt 14:20baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the 1Or attesting miraclesign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the AMatt 11:3; 21:11; John 1:21Prophet who is to come into the world.”

15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were 1Or aboutintending to come and take Him by force AJohn 18:36fto make Him king, BJohn 6:15-21: Matt 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-51withdrew again to CJohn 6:3the mountain by Himself alone.

16 Now when evening came, His AJohn 2:2disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea AMark 6:45; John 6:24, 59to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about 1Lit 25 or 30 stadiathree or four miles, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He *said to them, “It is I; 1Or stop being afraidAMatt 14:27do not be afraid.” 21 So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day AJohn 6:2the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus BJohn 6:15ffhad not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23 There came other small boats from AJohn 6:1Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the BLuke 7:13Lord CJohn 6:11had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and AMatt 14:34; Mark 6:53; John 6:17, 59came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “AMatt 23:7Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you AJohn 6:24seek Me, not because you saw BJohn 6:2, 14, 30signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27  “Do not AIs 55:2work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to BJohn 3:15f; 4:14; 6:40, 47, 54; 10:28; 17:2feternal life, which CMatt 8:20; John 6:53, 62the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, DJohn 3:33has set His seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is A1 Thess 1:3; James 2:22; 1 John 3:23; Rev 2:26the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He BJohn 3:17has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “AMatt 12:38What then do You do for a BJohn 6:2, 14, 26sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 31  “AEx 16:4, 15, 21; Num 11:8; John 6:49, 58Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘BPs 78:24; Ex 16:4, 15; Neh 9:15; Ps 105:40Hᴇ ɢᴀvᴇ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ʙʀᴇᴀᴅ oᴜᴛ oꜰ ʜᴇᴀvᴇɴ ᴛo ᴇᴀᴛ.’ ” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33  “For the bread of God is 1Or He who comesthat which AJohn 6:41, 50comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always AJohn 4:15give us this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, “AJohn 6:48, 51I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me BJohn 4:14will never thirst. 36  “But AJohn 6:26I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. 37  “AJohn 6:39; 17:2, 24All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38  “For AJohn 3:13I have come down from heaven, BMatt 26:39not to do My own will, but CJohn 4:34; 5:30the will of Him who DJohn 6:29sent Me. 39  “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of AJohn 6:37; 17:2, 24all that He has given Me I BJohn 17:12; 18:9lose nothing, but CMatt 10:15; John 6:40, 44, 54; 11:24raise it up on the last day. 40  “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who AJohn 12:45; 14:17, 19beholds the Son and BJohn 3:16believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will CMatt 10:15; John 6:39, 44, 54; 11:24raise him up on the last day.”

41 AJohn 1:19; 6:52Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that BJohn 6:33, 51, 58came down out of heaven.” 42 They were saying, “ALuke 4:22Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother BJohn 7:27fwe know? How does He now say, ‘CJohn 6:38, 62I have come down out of heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44  “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me AJer 31:3; Hos 11:4; John 6:65; 12:32draws him; and I will BJohn 6:39raise him up on the last day. 45  “It is written AActs 7:42; 13:40; Heb 8:11in the prophets, ‘BIs 54:13; Jer 31:34Aɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇʏ sʜᴀʟʟ ᴀʟʟ ʙᴇ CPhil 3:15; 1 Thess 4:9; 1 John 2:27ᴛᴀᴜɢʜᴛ oꜰ Goᴅ.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46  “AJohn 1:18Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes AJohn 3:36; 5:24; 6:51, 58; 11:26has eternal life. 48  “AJohn 6:35, 51I am the bread of life. 49  “AJohn 6:31, 58Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50  “This is the bread which AJohn 6:33comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and BJohn 3:36; 5:24; 6:47, 51, 58; 11:26not die. 51  “AJohn 6:35, 48I am the living bread that BJohn 6:41, 58came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, CJohn 3:36; 5:24; 6:47, 58; 11:26he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give DJohn 1:29; 3:14f; Heb 10:10; 1 John 4:10for the life of the world is EJohn 6:53-56My flesh.”

52 AJohn 1:19; 6:41Then the Jews BJohn 9:16; 10:19began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of AMatt 8:20; John 6:27, 62the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will AJohn 6:39raise him up on the last day. 55  “For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood AJohn 15:4f; 17:23; 1 John 2:24; 3:24; 4:15fabides in Me, and I in him. 57  “As the AMatt 16:16; John 5:26living Father BJohn 3:17; 6:29, 38sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58  “This is the bread which AJohn 6:33, 41, 51came down out of heaven; not as BJohn 6:31, 49the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread CJohn 3:36; 5:24; 6:47, 51; 11:26will live forever.”

59 These things He said AMatt 4:23in the synagogue as He taught BJohn 6:24in Capernaum.

60 Therefore many of His AJohn 2:2; 6:66; 7:3disciples, when they heard this said, “BJohn 6:52This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, AJohn 6:64conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this BMatt 11:6cause you to stumble? 62  “What then if you see AMatt 8:20; John 6:27, 53the Son of Man BMark 16:19; John 3:13ascending to where He was before? 63  “A2 Cor 3:6It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; BJohn 6:68the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64  “But there are AJohn 6:60, 66some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus BJohn 2:25knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and CMatt 10:4; John 6:71; 13:11who it was that would 1Or hand Him overbetray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have AJohn 6:37, 44said to you, that no one can come to Me unless BMatt 13:11; John 3:27it has been granted him from the Father.”

66 As a result of this many of His AJohn 2:2; 7:3disciples BJohn 6:60, 64withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to AMatt 10:2; John 2:2; 6:70f; 20:24the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 AMatt 16:16Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have BJohn 6:63; 12:49f; 17:8words of eternal life. 69  “We have believed and have come to know that You are AMark 1:24; 8:29; Luke 9:20the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “AJohn 15:16, 19Did I Myself not choose you, BMatt 10:2; John 2:2; 6:71; 20:24the twelve, and yet one of you is CJohn 8:44; 13:2, 27; 17:12a devil?” 71 Now He meant Judas AJohn 12:4; 13:2, 26the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, BMark 14:10one of CMatt 10:2; John 2:2; 6:70; 20:24the twelve, 1Or was intending towas going to betray Him.
