Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee
After these things Jesus 1Or made Himself visibleAMark 16:12; John 21:14manifested Himself BJohn 20:19, 26again to the disciples at the CJohn 6:1Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. Simon Peter, and AJohn 11:16Thomas called 1I.e. the TwinDidymus, and BJohn 1:45ffNathanael of CJohn 2:1Cana in Galilee, and DMatt 4:21; Mark 1:19; Luke 5:10the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and ALuke 5:5that night they caught nothing.
But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not ALuke 24:16; John 20:14know that it was Jesus. So Jesus *said to them, “Children, ALuke 24:41you do not have 1Lit something eaten with breadany fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, ALuke 5:4ffCast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch. So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. AJohn 13:23; 21:20Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about 1Lit 200 cubitsone hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.
So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal AJohn 18:18fire already laid and BJohn 6:9, 11; 21:10, 13fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the AJohn 6:9, 11; 21:9, 13fish which you have now caught.” 11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides
12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have AJohn 21:15breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took AJohn 21:9the bread and *gave it to them, and the BJohn 6:9, 11; 21:9, 10fish likewise. 14 This is now the AJohn 20:19, 26third time that Jesus 1Or made Himself visiblewas manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
The Love Motivation
15 So when they had AJohn 21:12finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you 1Gr agapaoBMatt 26:33; Mark 14:29; John 13:37love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2Gr phileolove You.” He *said to him, “Tend CLuke 12:32My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1Gr agapaolove Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I 2Gr phileolove You.” He *said to him, AMatt 2:6; Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:2; Rev 7:17Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you 1Gr phileolove Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him AJohn 13:38the third time, “Do you 1Gr phileolove Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, BJohn 16:30You know all things; You know that I 1Gr phileolove You.” Jesus *said to him, CJohn 21:15, 16Tend My sheep.
Our Times Are in His Hand
18  “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go. 19 Now this He said, AJohn 12:33; 18:32signifying by B2 Pet 1:14what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He *said to him, CMatt 8:22; 16:24; John 21:22Follow Me!”
20 Peter, turning around, *saw the AJohn 21:7disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had BJohn 13:25leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain AMatt 16:27f; 1 Cor 4:5; 11:26; James 5:7; Rev 2:25until I come, what is that to you? You BMatt 8:22; 16:24; John 21:19follow Me!” 23 Therefore this saying went out among AActs 1:15the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain BMatt 16:27f; 1 Cor 4:5; 11:26; James 5:7; Rev 2:25until I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who AJohn 15:27is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also AJohn 20:30many other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that *would be written.
