Judas Betrays Jesus
When Jesus had spoken these words, AMatt 26:30, 36; Mark 14:26, 32; Luke 22:39He went forth with His disciples over B2 Sam 15:23; 1 Kin 2:37; 15:13; 2 Kin 23:4, 6, 12; 2 Chr 15:16; 29:16; 30:14; Jer 31:40the 1Lit winter-torrentravine of the Kidron, where there was CMatt 26:36; Mark 14:32; John 18:26a garden, in which He entered 2Lit andwith His disciples. Now Judas also, who was 1Or handing Him overbetraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had ALuke 21:37; 22:39often met there with His disciples. AJohn 18:3-11: Matt 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-53Judas then, having received BJohn 18:12; Acts 10:1the Roman 1Normally 600 men; a battalioncohort and CJohn 7:32; 18:12, 18officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns and DMatt 25:1torches and weapons. So Jesus, AJohn 6:64; 13:1, 11knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, BJohn 18:7Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He. And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. Therefore He again asked them, AJohn 18:4Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” to fulfill the word which He spoke, AJohn 17:12Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” 10 Simon Peter then, AMatt 26:51; Mark 14:47having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; AMatt 20:22; 26:39; Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
Jesus before the Priests
12 AJohn 18:12f: Matt 26:57ffSo BJohn 18:3the Roman 1Or battalioncohort and the 2I.e. chiliarch, in command of a thousand troopscommander and the BJohn 18:3officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and led Him to ALuke 3:2; John 18:24Annas first; for he was father-in-law of BMatt 26:3; John 11:49, 51Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that AJohn 11:50it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
15 AMatt 26:58; Mark 14:54; Luke 22:54Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into BMatt 26:3; John 18:24, 28the court of the high priest, 16 AJohn 18:16-18: Matt 26:69f; Mark 14:66-68; Luke 22:55-57but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 AActs 12:13Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “BJohn 18:25You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the AJohn 18:3officers were standing there, having made BJohn 21:9a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were CMark 14:54, 67warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
19 AJohn 18:19-24: Matt 26:59-68; Mark 14:55-65; Luke 22:63-71The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I AJohn 7:26; 8:26have spoken openly to the world; I always BMatt 4:23; John 6:59taught in 1Lit a synagoguesynagogues and CMatt 26:55in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21  “Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.” 22 When He had said this, one of the AJohn 18:3officers standing nearby BJohn 19:3struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 AMatt 5:39; Acts 23:2-5Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 AJohn 18:13So Annas sent Him bound to AJohn 18:13Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s Denial of Jesus
25 AJohn 18:25-27: Matt 26:71-75; Mark 14:69-72; Luke 22:58-62Now BJohn 18:18Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “CJohn 18:17You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one AJohn 18:10whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in BJohn 18:1the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately AJohn 13:38a rooster crowed.
Jesus before Pilate
28 AMatt 27:2; Mark 15:1; Luke 23:1Then they *led Jesus from BJohn 18:13Caiaphas into CMatt 27:27; John 18:33; 19:9the 1I.e. governor’s official residencePraetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into CMatt 27:27; John 18:33; 19:9the 1I.e. governor’s official residencePraetorium so that DJohn 11:55; Acts 11:3they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 AJohn 18:29-38: Matt 27:11-14; Mark 15:2-5; Luke 23:2, 3Therefore Pilate went out to them and *said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,” 32 to fulfill AMatt 20:19; 26:2; Mark 10:33f; Luke 18:32f; John 3:14; 8:28; 12:32fthe word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
33 Therefore Pilate AJohn 18:28, 29; 19:9entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “BLuke 23:3; John 19:12Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this 1Lit from yourselfon your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, AMatt 26:53; Luke 17:21; John 6:15My kingdom 1Or is not derived fromis not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not 2Lit from hereof this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, AMatt 27:11; Mark 15:2; Luke 22:70; 23:3You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, BJohn 1:14; 3:32; 8:14to testify to the truth. CJohn 8:47; 1 John 4:6Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”
And when he had said this, he AJohn 18:33; 19:4went out again to the Jews and *said to them, “BLuke 23:4; John 19:4, 6I find no guilt in Him. 39  “AJohn 18:39-19:16: Matt 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:18-25But you have a custom that I release someone 1Or to youfor you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release 1Or to youfor you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “AActs 3:14Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
