1 But Jesus went to AMatt 21:1the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and AMatt 26:55; John 8:20He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5  “Now in the Law ALev 20:10; Deut 22:22fMoses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, AMatt 16:1; 19:3; 22:18, 35; Mark 8:11; 10:2; 12:15; Luke 10:25; 11:16testing Him, BMark 3:2so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, AJohn 8:10He straightened up, and said to them, “BMatt 7:1; Rom 2:1He who is without sin among you, let him be the CDeut 17:7first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 AJohn 8:7Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, 1Or SirLord.” And Jesus said, “AJohn 3:17I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on BJohn 5:14sin no more.”]

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “AJohn 1:4; 9:5; 12:35I am the Light of the world; BMatt 5:14he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “AJohn 5:31You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not 1Or validtrue.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “AJohn 18:37; Rev 1:5; 3:14Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is 1Or validtrue, for I know BJohn 8:42; 13:3; 16:28where I came from and where I am going; but CJohn 7:28; 9:29you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15  “A1 Sam 16:7; John 7:24You judge 1I.e. by a carnal standardaccording to the flesh; BJohn 3:17I am not judging anyone. 16  “But even AJohn 5:30if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17  “Even in ADeut 17:6; 19:15your law it has been written that the testimony of BMatt 18:16two men is 1I.e. valid or admissibletrue. 18  “I am He who testifies about Myself, and AJohn 5:37; 1 John 5:9the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; AJohn 7:28; 8:55; 14:7, 9; 16:3if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke in AMark 12:41, 43; Luke 21:1the treasury, as BJohn 7:14; 8:2He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because CJohn 7:30His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and AJohn 7:34you will seek Me, and BJohn 8:24will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So AJohn 1:19; 8:48, 52, 57the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘BJohn 7:35Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “AJohn 3:31You are from below, I am from above; B1 John 4:5you are of this world, CJohn 17:14, 16I am not of this world. 24  “Therefore I said to you that you AJohn 8:21will die in your sins; for unless you believe that 1Most authorities associate this with Ex 3:14, I AM WHO I AMBMatt 24:5; Mark 13:6; Luke 21:8; John 4:26; 8:28, 58; 13:19I am He, AJohn 8:21you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “1Or That which I have been saying to you from the beginningWhat have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26  “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but AJohn 3:33; 7:28He who sent Me is true; and BJohn 8:40; 12:49; 15:15the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you AJohn 3:14; 12:32lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that 1Lit I AM (v 24 note)BMatt 24:5; Mark 13:6; Luke 21:8; John 4:26; 8:24, 58; 13:19I am He, and CJohn 3:11; 5:19I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29  “And He who sent Me is with Me; AJohn 8:16; 16:32He 1Or did not leavehas not left Me alone, for BJohn 4:34I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, AJohn 7:31many came to believe in Him.

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “AJohn 15:7; 2 John 9If you continue in My word, then you are truly BJohn 2:2disciples of Mine; 32 and AJohn 1:14, 17you will know the truth, and BJohn 8:36; Rom 8:2; 2 Cor 3:17; Gal 5:1, 13; James 2:12; 1 Pet 2:16the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “AMatt 3:9; Luke 3:8; John 8:37, 39We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ARom 6:16; 2 Pet 2:19everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35  “AGen 21:10; Gal 4:30The slave does not remain in the house forever; BLuke 15:31the son does remain forever. 36  “So if the Son AJohn 8:32makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37  “I know that you are AMatt 3:9; John 8:39Abraham’s descendants; yet BJohn 7:1; 8:40you seek to kill Me, because My word 1Or makes no progresshas no place in you. 38  “I speak the things which I have seen 1Or in the presence ofwith My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from AJohn 8:41, 44your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is AMatt 3:9; John 8:37our father.” Jesus *said to them, “BRom 9:7; Gal 3:7If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40  “But as it is, AJohn 7:1; 8:37you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has BJohn 8:26told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41  “You are doing the deeds of AJohn 8:38, 44your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; BDeut 32:6; Is 63:16; 64:8we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, A1 John 5:1you would love Me, BJohn 13:3; 16:28, 30; 17:8for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have CJohn 7:28not even come on My own initiative, but 1Lit that OneDJohn 3:17He sent Me. 43  “Why do you not understand 1Or My way of speakingAJohn 8:33, 39, 41what I am saying? It is because you cannot BJohn 5:25hear My word. 44  “A1 John 3:8You are of BJohn 8:38, 41your father the devil, and CJohn 7:17you want to do the desires of your father. DGen 3:4; 1 John 3:8, 15He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because E1 John 2:4there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks 1Lit the liea lie, he FMatt 12:34speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of 2Lit itlies. 45  “But because AJohn 18:37I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46  “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If AJohn 18:37I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47  “A1 John 4:6He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 AJohn 1:19The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a BMatt 10:5; John 4:9Samaritan and CJohn 7:20have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not AJohn 7:20have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50  “But AJohn 5:41; 8:54I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51  “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone AJohn 8:55; 14:23; 15:20; 17:6keeps My word he will never BMatt 16:28; Luke 2:26; John 8:52; Heb 2:9; 11:5see death.” 52 AJohn 1:19The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You BJohn 7:20have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone CJohn 8:55; 14:23; 15:20; 17:6keeps My word, he will never DJohn 8:51taste of death.’ 53  “Surely You AJohn 4:12are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “AJohn 8:50If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; BJohn 7:39it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and AJohn 8:19; 15:21you have not come to know Him, BJohn 7:29but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be CJohn 8:44a liar like you, BJohn 7:29but I do know Him and DJohn 8:51; 15:10keep His word. 56  “AJohn 8:37, 39Your father Abraham BMatt 13:17; Heb 11:13rejoiced 1Lit in order that he might seeto see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 AJohn 1:19So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham 1Lit came into beingwas born, AEx 3:14; John 1:1; 17:5, 24I am.” 59 Therefore they AMatt 12:14; John 10:31; 11:8picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus 1Lit was hiddenBJohn 12:36hid Himself and went out of the temple.
