Jesus Goes to Galilee
Therefore when ALuke 7:13the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and BJohn 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17baptizing more disciples than John (although AJohn 3:22, 26; 1 Cor 1:17Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His BJohn 2:2disciples were), He left AJohn 3:22Judea and went away BJohn 2:11fagain into Galilee. And He had to pass through ALuke 9:52Samaria. So He *came to a city of ALuke 9:52Samaria called Sychar, near BGen 33:19; Josh 24:32the parcel of ground that CGen 48:22; John 4:12Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about 1Perhaps 6 p.m. Roman time or noon Jewish timethe sixth hour.
The Woman of Samaria
There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His AJohn 2:2disciples had gone away into BJohn 4:5, 39the city to buy food. Therefore the ALuke 9:52Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For BEzra 4:3-6, 11ff; Matt 10:5; John 8:48; Acts 10:28Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you AJer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “1Or LordSir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that AJer 2:13; John 4:14; 7:37f; Rev 7:17; 21:6; 22:1, 17living water? 12  “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who AJohn 4:6gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him AJohn 6:35; 7:38shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to BMatt 25:46; John 6:27eternal life.”
15 The woman *said to Him, “1Or LordSir, AJohn 6:35give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “1Or LordSir, I perceive that You are AMatt 21:11; Luke 7:16, 39; 24:19; John 6:14; 7:40; 9:17a prophet. 20  “AGen 33:20; John 4:12Our fathers worshiped in BDeut 11:29; Josh 8:33this mountain, and you people say that CLuke 9:53in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, AJohn 4:23; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming when BMal 1:11; 1 Tim 2:8neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22  “A2 Kin 17:28-41You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for BIs 2:3; Rom 3:1f; 9:4fsalvation is from the Jews. 23  “But AJohn 4:21; 5:25, 28; 16:2, 32an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father BPhil 3:3in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24  “God is 1Or Spiritspirit, and those who worship Him must worship APhil 3:3in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that ADan 9:25; John 1:41Messiah is coming (BMatt 1:16; 27:17, 22; Luke 2:11He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, AJohn 8:24, 28, 58; 9:37; 13:19I who speak to you am He.
27 At this point His AJohn 4:8disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man AJohn 4:17fwho told me all the things that I have done; BMatt 12:23; John 7:26, 31this is not 1I.e. the Messiahthe Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “AMatt 23:7; 26:25, 49; Mark 9:5; 11:21; 14:45; John 1:38, 49; 3:2, 26; 6:25; 9:2; 11:8Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the ALuke 6:13-16; John 1:40-49; 2:2disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to AJohn 5:30; 6:38do the will of Him who sent Me and to BJohn 5:36; 17:4; 19:28, 30accomplish His work. 35  “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white AMatt 9:37, 38; Luke 10:2for harvest. 36  “Already he who reaps is receiving AProv 11:18; 1 Cor 9:17fwages and is gathering BRom 1:13fruit for CMatt 19:29; John 3:36; 4:14; 5:24; Rom 2:7; 6:23life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37  “For in this case the saying is true, ‘AJob 31:8; Mic 6:15One sows and another reaps.’ 38  “I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”
The Samaritans
39 From AJohn 4:5, 30that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “BJohn 4:29He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed AMatt 1:21; Luke 2:11; John 1:29; Acts 5:31; 13:23; 1 Tim 4:10; 1 John 4:14the Savior of the world.”
43 After AJohn 4:40the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that AMatt 13:57; Mark 6:4; Luke 4:24a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, AJohn 2:23having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
Healing a Nobleman’s Son
46 Therefore He came again to AJohn 2:1Cana of Galilee BJohn 2:9where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at CLuke 4:23; John 2:12Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come AJohn 4:3, 54out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see 1Or attesting miraclesADan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4signs and ADan 4:2f; 6:27; Matt 24:24; Mark 13:22; Acts 2:19, 22, 43; 4:30; 5:12; 6:8; 7:36; 14:3; 15:12; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 12:12; 2 Thess 2:9; Heb 2:4wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “1Or LordSir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, AMatt 8:13Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his 1Or boyson was living. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the 1Perhaps 7 p.m. Roman time or 1 p.m. Jewish timeseventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and AActs 11:14his whole household. 54 This is again a AJohn 2:11second 1Or attesting miraclesign that Jesus performed when He had BJohn 4:45fcome out of Judea into Galilee.
