The Testimony of John
19 This is AJohn 1:7the testimony of John, when BJohn 2:18, 20; 5:10, 15f, 18; 6:41, 52; 7:1, 11, 13, 15, 35; 8:22, 48, 52, 57; 9:18, 22; 10:24, 31, 33the Jews sent to him priests and Levites CMatt 15:1from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “ALuke 3:15f; John 3:28I am not 1I.e. the Messiahthe Christ.” 21 They asked him, “What then? Are you AMatt 11:14; 16:14Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you BDeut 18:15, 18; Matt 21:11; John 1:25the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am AIs 40:3; Matt 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4ᴀ voɪcᴇ oꜰ oɴᴇ cʀʏɪɴɢ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ wɪʟᴅᴇʀɴᴇss, ‘Mᴀᴋᴇ sᴛʀᴀɪɢʜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ wᴀʏ oꜰ ᴛʜᴇ Loʀᴅ,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the 1I.e. MessiahChrist, nor Elijah, nor ADeut 18:15, 18; Matt 21:11; John 1:21the Prophet?” 26 John answered them saying, “AMatt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; Acts 1:5I baptize 1The Gr here can be translated in, with or byin water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27  “It is AMatt 3:11; John 1:30He who comes after me, the BMatt 3:11; Mark 1:7; Luke 3:16thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany AJohn 3:26; 10:40beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, AIs 53:7; John 1:36; Acts 8:32; 1 Pet 1:19; Rev 5:6, 8, 12f; 6:1the Lamb of God who BMatt 1:21; 1 John 3:5takes away the sin of the world! 30  “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘AMatt 3:11; John 1:27After me comes a Man who 1Lit has become before mehas a higher rank than I, BJohn 1:15for He existed before me.’ 31  “I did not recognize 1I.e. as the MessiahHim, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing 2The Gr here can be translated in, with or byin water.” 32 John AJohn 1:7testified saying, “BMatt 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33  “I did not recognize 1I.e. as the MessiahHim, but He who sent me to baptize 2The Gr here can be translated in, with or byin water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, AMatt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; Acts 1:5this is the One who baptizes 2The Gr here can be translated in, with or byin the Holy Spirit.’ 34  “I myself have seen, and have testified that this is AMatt 4:3; John 1:49the Son of God.”
Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts
35 Again AJohn 1:29the next day John was standing 1Lit andwith two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, AJohn 1:29the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “AMatt 23:7f; John 1:49Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the 1Perhaps 10 a.m. (Roman time)tenth hour. 40 AMatt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:2-11; John 1:40-42One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the ADan 9:25; John 4:25Messiah” (which translated means 1Gr Anointed OneChrist). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of 1Gr JoannesAMatt 16:17; John 21:15-17John; you shall be called B1 Cor 1:12; 3:22; 9:5; 15:5; Gal 1:18; 2:9, 11, 14Cephas” (which is translated 2I.e. You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see AEzek 1:1; Matt 3:16; Luke 3:21; Acts 7:56; 10:11; Rev 19:11the heavens opened and BGen 28:12the angels of God ascending and descending on CMatt 8:20the Son of Man.”
