Faith Brings Righteousness
1Lit OYou foolish AGal 1:2Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ B1 Cor 1:23; Gal 5:11was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of 1Or lawthe Law, or by 2Lit the hearing of faithARom 10:17hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun 1Or withby the Spirit, are you now 2Or ending withbeing perfected by the flesh? Did you 1Or experiencesuffer so many things in vain—A1 Cor 15:2if indeed it was in vain? So then, does He who A2 Cor 9:10; Phil 1:19provides you with the Spirit and B1 Cor 12:10works 1Or works of powermiracles among you, do it by the works of 2Or lawthe Law, or by 3Lit the hearing of faithCRom 10:17hearing with faith?
1Lit Just asEven so ARom 4:3Abraham BGen 15:6ʙᴇʟɪᴇvᴇᴅ Goᴅ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴛ wᴀs ʀᴇcᴋoɴᴇᴅ ᴛo ʜɪᴍ ᴀs ʀɪɢʜᴛᴇoᴜsɴᴇss. Therefore, 1Lit knowbe sure that ARom 4:16; Gal 3:9it is those who are of faith who are BLuke 19:9; Gal 6:16sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God 1Lit justifieswould justify the 2Lit nationsGentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying,AGen 12:3Aʟʟ ᴛʜᴇ ɴᴀᴛɪoɴs wɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ʙʟᴇssᴇᴅ ɪɴ ʏoᴜ.” So then AGal 3:7those who are of faith are blessed with 1Lit the believing AbrahamAbraham, the believer.
10 For as many as are of the works of 1Or lawthe Law are under a curse; for it is written, “ADeut 27:26Cᴜʀsᴇᴅ ɪs ᴇvᴇʀʏoɴᴇ wʜo ᴅoᴇs ɴoᴛ ᴀʙɪᴅᴇ ʙʏ ᴀʟʟ ᴛʜɪɴɢs wʀɪᴛᴛᴇɴ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʙooᴋ oꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʟᴀw, ᴛo ᴘᴇʀꜰoʀᴍ ᴛʜᴇᴍ.” 11 Now that AGal 2:16no one is justified 1Or inby 2Or lawthe Law before God is evident; for, “3Or But he who is righteous by faith shall liveBHab 2:4; Rom 1:17; Heb 10:38Tʜᴇ ʀɪɢʜᴛᴇoᴜs ᴍᴀɴ sʜᴀʟʟ ʟɪvᴇ ʙʏ ꜰᴀɪᴛʜ.” 12 1Or AndHowever, the Law is not 2Or based onof faith; on the contrary, “ALev 18:5; Rom 10:5Hᴇ wʜo ᴘʀᴀcᴛɪcᴇs ᴛʜᴇᴍ sʜᴀʟʟ ʟɪvᴇ 3Or inʙʏ ᴛʜᴇᴍ.” 13 Christ AGal 4:5redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “BDeut 21:23Cᴜʀsᴇᴅ ɪs ᴇvᴇʀʏoɴᴇ wʜo ʜᴀɴɢs oɴ CActs 5:301Or cross; lit woodᴛʀᴇᴇ”— 14 in order that ARom 4:9, 16; Gal 3:28in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might 1Or occurcome to the Gentiles, so that we BGal 3:2would receive CActs 2:33; Eph 1:13the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Intent of the Law
15 AActs 1:15; Rom 1:13; Gal 6:18Brethren, BRom 3:5I speak 1Lit according to manin terms of human relations: CHeb 6:16even though it is only a man’s 2Or will or testamentcovenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds 3Or a codicilconditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken ALuke 1:55; Rom 4:13, 16; 9:4to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “BActs 3:25And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came AGen 15:13f; Ex 12:40; Acts 7:6four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For ARom 4:14if the inheritance is 1Lit out of, frombased on law, it is no longer 1Lit out of, frombased on a promise; but BHeb 6:14God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
19 ARom 5:20Why the Law then? It was added 1Or for the sake of definingbecause of transgressions, having been BActs 7:53ordained through angels CEx 20:19; Deut 5:5by the 2Lit handagency of a mediator, until DGal 3:16the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now A1 Tim 2:5; Heb 8:6; 9:15; 12:24a mediator is not 1Lit of onefor one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? ALuke 20:16; Gal 2:17May it never be! For BGal 2:21if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness 1Or would indeed bewould indeed have been 2Lit out of, frombased on law. 22 But the Scripture has ARom 11:32shut up 1Lit thingseveryone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, ARom 11:32being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our A1 Cor 4:15tutor to lead us to Christ, so that BGal 2:16we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a 1Lit child-conductorA1 Cor 4:15tutor. 26 For you are all ARom 8:14; Gal 4:5sons of God through faith in BRom 8:1; Gal 3:28; 4:14; 5:6, 24; Eph 1:1; Phil 1:1; Col 1:4; 1 Tim 1:12; 2 Tim 1:1; Titus 1:4Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were AMatt 28:19; Rom 6:3; 1 Cor 10:2baptized into Christ have BRom 13:14clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 ARom 3:22; 1 Cor 12:13; Col 3:11There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is 1Lit not male and femaleneither male nor female; for BJohn 17:11; Eph 2:15you are all one in CRom 8:1; Gal 3:26; 4:14; 5:6, 24; Eph 1:1; Phil 1:1; Col 1:4; 1 Tim 1:12; 2 Tim 1:1; Titus 1:4Christ Jesus. 29 And if ARom 4:13; 1 Cor 3:23you 1Lit are Christ’sbelong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s 2Lit seeddescendants, heirs according to BRom 9:8; Gal 3:18; 4:28promise.
