1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:

Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I am speaking today in your 1Lit earshearing, that you may learn them and observe 2Lit to do themthem carefully. 2  “The Loʀᴅ our God made AEx 19:5; Mal 4:4a covenant with us at Horeb. 3  “AJer 31:32; Heb 8:9The Loʀᴅ did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of 1Lit us ourselvesus alive here today. 4  “The Loʀᴅ spoke to you ANum 14:14; Deut 34:10face to face at the mountain BDeut 4:33from the midst of the fire, 5 while AGal 3:19I was standing between the Loʀᴅ and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Loʀᴅ; BEx 19:16, 21-24; 20:18; Heb 12:18-21for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. 1Lit sayingHe said,

6 ‘AEx 20:2-17; Lev 26:1; Deut 6:4; Ps 81:10I am the Loʀᴅ your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of 1Lit slavesslavery.

7 ‘AEx 20:3You shall have no other gods 1Or besidesbefore Me.

8 ‘AEx 20:4-6; Lev 26:1; Deut 4:15-18; 27:15; Ps 97:7You shall not make for yourself 1Or a graven imagean idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above 2Lit or what isor on the earth beneath 2Lit or what isor in the water under the earth. 9  ‘You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Loʀᴅ your God, am a jealous God, AEx 34:7; Num 14:18; Deut 7:10visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but ANum 14:18; Deut 7:9; Jer 32:18showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

11 ‘AEx 20:7; Lev 19:12; Deut 6:13; 10:20; Matt 5:33You shall not take the name of the Loʀᴅ your God in vain, for the Loʀᴅ will not 1Or hold him guiltlessleave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

12 ‘AEx 16:23-30; 20:8-11; 31:13f; Mark 2:27fObserve the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Loʀᴅ your God commanded you. 13  ‘Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but AGen 2:2; Heb 4:4the seventh day is a sabbath of the Loʀᴅ your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who 1Lit is in your gatesstays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15  ‘AEx 20:11You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Loʀᴅ your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Loʀᴅ your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

22 “These words the Loʀᴅ spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. AEx 24:12; 31:18; Deut 4:13He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23  “And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24  “You said, ‘Behold, the Loʀᴅ our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives. 25  ‘AEx 20:18, 19; Deut 18:16Now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Loʀᴅ our God any longer, then we will die. 26  ‘For ADeut 4:33who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27  ‘1Lit Go yourselfGo near and hear all that the Loʀᴅ our God says; then speak to us all that the Loʀᴅ our God speaks to you, and we will hear and do it.’

28 “The Loʀᴅ heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, ADeut 18:17and the Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29  ‘APs 81:13; Is 48:18Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and BDeut 11:1keep all My commandments always, that CDeut 5:16, 33it may be well with them and with their sons forever! 30  ‘Go, say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31  ‘AEx 24:12But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I give them to possess.’ 32  “So you shall observe to do just as the Loʀᴅ your God has commanded you; ADeut 17:20; 28:14; Josh 1:7; 23:6; Prov 4:27you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33  “ADeut 10:12; Jer 7:23; Luke 1:6You shall walk in all the way which the Loʀᴅ your God has commanded you, BDeut 4:1, 40; 12:25, 28; 22:7; Eph 6:3that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.
