The Believer’s Rest
1 Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have A2 Cor 6:1; Gal 5:4; Heb 12:15come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but ARom 10:17; Gal 3:2; 1 Thess 2:13the word 1Lit of hearingthey heard did not profit them, because 2Two early mss read they were...faith with those who heardit was not united by faith in those who heard. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,
“APs 95:11; Heb 3:11As I swoʀᴇ ɪɴ Mʏ wʀᴀᴛʜ,
Tʜᴇʏ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ ᴇɴᴛᴇʀ Mʏ ʀᴇsᴛ,”
although His works were finished BMatt 25:34from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has said AHeb 2:6somewhere concerning the seventh day: “BGen 2:2Aɴᴅ Goᴅ CEx 20:11; 31:17ʀᴇsᴛᴇᴅ oɴ ᴛʜᴇ sᴇvᴇɴᴛʜ ᴅᴀʏ ꜰʀoᴍ ᴀʟʟ Hɪs woʀᴋs”; 5 and again in this passage, “APs 95:11; Heb 3:11Tʜᴇʏ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ ᴇɴᴛᴇʀ Mʏ ʀᴇsᴛ.” 6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of AHeb 3:18; 4:11disobedience, 7 He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying 1Or inthrough David after so long a time just AHeb 3:7fas has been said before,
“BPs 95:7fToᴅᴀʏ ɪꜰ ʏoᴜ ʜᴇᴀʀ Hɪs voɪcᴇ,
Do ɴoᴛ ʜᴀʀᴅᴇɴ ʏoᴜʀ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛs.”
8 For AJosh 22:4if 1Gr JesusJoshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also ARev 14:13rested from his works, as BGen 2:2; Heb 4:4God did from His. 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same A2 Pet 2:6example of BHeb 3:18; 4:6disobedience. 12 For AJer 23:29; Eph 5:26; Heb 6:5; 1 Pet 1:23the word of God is BActs 7:38living and C1 Thess 2:13active and sharper than any two-edged DEph 6:17sword, and piercing as far as the division of E1 Thess 5:23soul and E1 Thess 5:23spirit, of both joints and marrow, and FJohn 12:48; 1 Cor 14:24fable to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And A2 Chr 16:9; Ps 33:13-15there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are BJob 26:6open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
14 Therefore, since we have a great AHeb 2:17high priest who has BEph 4:10; Heb 6:20; 8:1; 9:24passed through the heavens, Jesus CMatt 4:3; Heb 1:2; 6:6; 7:3; 10:29the Son of God, let us hold fast our DHeb 3:1confession. 15 For we do not have AHeb 2:17a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been BHeb 2:18tempted in all things as we are, yet C2 Cor 5:21; Heb 7:26without sin. 16 Therefore let us AHeb 7:19draw near with BHeb 3:6confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
