1 “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which ADeut 1:3I am teaching you to perform, so that BLev 18:5; Deut 5:33; 8:1; 16:20; 30:16, 19; Ezek 20:11; Rom 10:5you may live and go in and take possession of the land which the Loʀᴅ, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2  “ADeut 12:32; Prov 30:6; Rev 22:18You shall not add to the word which BDeut 4:5, 14, 40I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Loʀᴅ your God which I command you. 3  “ANum 25:1-9Your eyes have seen what the Loʀᴅ has done in the case of Baal-peor, for all the men who followed Baal-peor, the Loʀᴅ your God has destroyed 1Lit himthem from among you. 4  “But you who held fast to the Loʀᴅ your God are alive today, every one of you.

5 “See, I have taught you statutes and judgments ALev 26:46; 27:34just as the Loʀᴅ my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. 6  “So keep and do them, ADeut 30:19, 20; 32:46, 47; Job 28:28; Ps 19:7; 111:10; Prov 1:7; 2 Tim 3:15for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7  “For ADeut 4:32-34; 2 Sam 7:23what great nation is there that has a god BPs 34:17, 18; 145:18; 148:14; Is 55:6so near to it as is the Loʀᴅ our God CPs 34:18; 85:9whenever we call on Him? 8  “Or what great nation is there that has APs 89:14; 97:2; 119:144, 160, 172statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

9 “Only ADeut 4:23; 6:12; 8:11, 14, 19; Prov 4:23; 23:19give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart BDeut 6:2; 12:1; 16:3all the days of your life; but CGen 18:19; Deut 4:10; 6:7, 20-25; 11:19; 32:46; Ps 78:5, 6; Prov 22:6; Eph 6:4make them known to your sons and your grandsons. 10  “Remember the day you stood before the Loʀᴅ your God at Horeb, when the Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘Assemble the people to Me, that I may let them hear My words ADeut 14:23; 17:19; 31:12, 13so they may learn to 1Or reverencefear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may BDeut 4:9teach their children.’ 11  “You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, AEx 19:18; Heb 12:18, 19and the mountain burned with fire to the very heart of the heavens: darkness, cloud and thick gloom. 12  “Then the Loʀᴅ spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form—only a voice. 13  “So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, AEx 34:28; Deut 10:4the Ten 1Lit WordsCommandments; and BEx 31:18; 34:1, 28He wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14  “The Loʀᴅ commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might perform them in the land where you are going over to possess it.

15 “So AJosh 23:11watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any BIs 40:18form on the day the Loʀᴅ spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, 16 so that you do not ADeut 4:25; 9:12; 31:29act corruptly and BEx 20:4; Lev 26:1; Deut 5:8, 9; 27:15; Rom 1:23make a graven image for yourselves in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of ARom 1:23any winged bird that flies in the sky, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the earth. 19  “And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, AGen 2:1; Deut 17:3; 2 Kin 17:16; 21:3all the host of heaven, BDeut 13:5, 10; Job 31:26-28and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the Loʀᴅ your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. 20  “But the Loʀᴅ has taken you and brought you out of A1 Kin 8:51; Jer 11:4the iron furnace, from Egypt, to BEx 19:5; Deut 7:6; 14:2; 26:18; Titus 2:14; 1 Pet 2:9be a people for His own possession, as today.

21 “ANum 20:12; Deut 1:37Now the Loʀᴅ was angry with me on your account, and swore that I would not cross the Jordan, and that I would not enter the good land which the Loʀᴅ your God is giving you as an inheritance. 22  “For ANum 27:13, 14I will die in this land, I shall not cross the Jordan, but you shall cross and take possession of this BDeut 3:25good land. 23  “So watch yourselves, ADeut 4:9that you do not forget the covenant of the Loʀᴅ your God which He made with you, and BDeut 4:16make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the Loʀᴅ your God has commanded you. 24  “For the Loʀᴅ your God is a AEx 24:17; Deut 9:3; Is 30:27; 33:14; Heb 12:29consuming fire, a BDeut 5:9; 6:15jealous God.

25 “When you 1Lit begetbecome the father of children and children’s children and have remained long in the land, and ADeut 4:16act corruptly, and BDeut 4:23make an 2Or a graven imageidol in the form of anything, and C2 Kin 17:17do that which is evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ your God so as to provoke Him to anger, 26 I ADeut 30:19; 31:28; 32:1; Is 1:2; Mic 6:2call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will BDeut 7:4; 8:19, 20surely perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to possess it. You shall not 1Lit prolong your dayslive long on it, but will be utterly destroyed. 27  “The Loʀᴅ will ALev 26:33; Deut 28:64; 29:28; Neh 1:8scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Loʀᴅ drives you. 28  “ADeut 28:36, 64; Jer 16:13There you will serve gods, the work of man’s hands, BDeut 29:17wood and stone, CPs 115:4-8; 135:15-18; Is 44:12-20which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell. 29  “ADeut 30:1-3, 10; 2 Chr 15:4; Is 55:6; Jer 29:13But from there you will seek the Loʀᴅ your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him BDeut 6:5; 10:12with all your heart and all your soul. 30  “When you APs 18:6; 59:16; 107:6, 13are in distress and all these things have come upon you, BDeut 31:29; Jer 23:20; Hos 3:5; Heb 1:2in the latter days CJer 4:1, 2you will return to the Loʀᴅ your God and listen to His voice. 31  “For the Loʀᴅ your God is a AEx 34:6; 2 Chr 30:9; Neh 9:31; Ps 103:8; 111:4; 116:5; Jon 4:2compassionate God; BDeut 31:6, 8; Josh 1:5; 1 Chr 28:20; Heb 13:5He will not fail you nor CJer 30:11destroy you nor DLev 26:45forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

32 “Indeed, ADeut 32:7; Job 8:8ask now concerning the former days which were before you, since the BGen 1:27; Is 45:12day that God created 1Or Adamman on the earth, and inquire CDeut 28:64; Matt 24:31from one end of the heavens to the other. DDeut 4:7; 2 Sam 7:23Has anything been done like this great thing, or has anything been heard like it? 33  “AEx 20:22; Deut 5:24, 26Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived? 34  “AEx 14:30; Deut 33:29Or has a god tried to go to take for himself a nation from within another nation BDeut 7:19by trials, by signs and wonders and by war and CDeut 5:15; 6:21; Ps 136:12by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm and by great terrors, 1Lit according to all thatas the Loʀᴅ your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35  “To you it was shown that you might know that the Loʀᴅ, He is God; AEx 8:10; 9:14; Deut 4:39; 32:12, 39; 1 Sam 2:2; Is 43:10-12; 44:6-8; 45:5-7; Mark 12:32there is no other besides Him. 36  “AEx 19:9, 19; 20:18, 22; Deut 4:33; Neh 9:13; Heb 12:25Out of the heavens He let you hear His voice BDeut 8:5to discipline you; and on earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire. 37  “1Lit And instead, becauseADeut 7:7, 8; 10:15; 33:3Because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose 2Lit his seedtheir descendants after them.
