1 Then He said to Moses, “AEx 19:24Come up to the Loʀᴅ, you and Aaron, BEx 6:23; 28:1; Lev 10:1, 2Nadab and Abihu and CNum 11:16seventy of the elders of Israel, and you shall worship at a distance. 2  “Moses alone, however, shall come near to the Loʀᴅ, but they shall not come near, nor shall the people come up with him.”

3 Then Moses came and recounted to the people all the words of the Loʀᴅ and all the 1Or judgmentsordinances; and all the people answered with one voice and said, “AEx 19:8; 24:7; Deut 5:27All the words which the Loʀᴅ has spoken we will do!” 4 AEx 17:14; 34:27; Deut 31:9Moses wrote down all the words of the Loʀᴅ. Then he arose early in the morning, and built an BEx 17:15altar 1Lit underat the foot of the mountain with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 He sent young men of the sons of Israel, AEx 18:12and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as peace offerings to the Loʀᴅ. 6 AHeb 9:18Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 Then he took AEx 24:4; Heb 9:19the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, “BEx 24:3All that the Loʀᴅ has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!” 8 So AHeb 9:19, 20Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Behold BZech 9:11; Matt 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; 1 Cor 11:25; Heb 13:20the blood of the covenant, which the Loʀᴅ has 1Lit cutmade with you 2Lit on allin accordance with all these words.”

9 Then Moses went up 1Lit andwith Aaron, AEx 24:1Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, 10 and AEx 24:11; Num 12:8; Is 6:5; John 1:18; 6:46they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet 1Lit like a pavementBEzek 1:26; 10:1; Rev 4:3there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, 2Lit and asas clear as the sky itself. 11 Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the nobles of the sons of Israel; and AGen 16:13; 32:30; Ex 24:10they saw God, and they ate and drank.

12 Now the Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and 1Lit beremain there, and AEx 31:18; 32:15; Deut 5:22I will give you the stone tablets 2Lit andwith the law and the commandment which I have written for their instruction.” 13 So Moses arose 1Lit andwith AEx 17:9-14; 33:11Joshua his 2Or ministerservant, and Moses went up to BEx 3:1the mountain of God. 14 But to the elders he said, “AGen 22:5Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, BEx 17:10, 12Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever 1Lit is a master of mattershas a legal matter, let him approach them.” 15 Then Moses went up to the mountain, and AEx 19:9the cloud covered the mountain. 16 AEx 16:10; Num 14:10The glory of the Loʀᴅ 1Lit dweltrested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; and on the seventh day He BPs 99:7called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. 17 AEx 3:2; Ezek 1:28And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the Loʀᴅ was like a BDeut 4:24; 9:3; Heb 12:29consuming fire on the mountain top. 18 Moses entered the midst of the cloud 1Lit andas he went up to the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain AEx 34:28; Deut 9:9; 10:10forty days and forty nights.
