Moses on Sinai
AEx 12:6, 51; 16:1In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, 1Lit on this dayon that very day they came into the wilderness of BDeut 1:6; 4:10, 15; 5:2Sinai. When they set out from AEx 17:1; Num 33:15Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of BEx 3:1, 12; 18:5the mountain. Moses went up to God, and AEx 3:4the Loʀᴅ called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: ADeut 29:2You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on BDeut 32:11; Rev 12:14eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself.  ‘Now then, AEx 15:26; Deut 5:2fif you will indeed obey My voice and BPs 78:10keep My covenant, then you shall be CDeut 4:20; 7:6; 14:2; 26:18; Ps 135:4; Titus 2:14; 1 Pet 2:9My 1Or special treasureown possession among all the peoples, for DEx 9:29; Deut 10:14; Job 41:11; Ps 50:12; 1 Cor 10:26all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me A1 Pet 2:5, 9; Rev 1:6; 5:10a kingdom of priests and BDeut 7:6; 14:21; 26:19; Is 62:12a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
AEx 4:29, 30So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Loʀᴅ had commanded him. AEx 4:31; 24:3, 7; Deut 5:27; 26:17All the people answered together and said, “All that the Loʀᴅ has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Loʀᴅ. The Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in AEx 19:16; 24:15, 16; Deut 4:11; Ps 99:7a thick cloud, so that the BDeut 4:12, 36people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Loʀᴅ.
10 The Loʀᴅ also said to Moses, “Go to the people and ALev 11:44, 45consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them BGen 35:2; Lev 15:5; Num 8:7, 21; 19:19; Rev 22:14wash their garments; 11 and let them be ready for the third day, for on AEx 19:16the third day the Loʀᴅ will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12  “You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘1Lit Take heed to yourselvesBeware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; AHeb 12:20whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13  ‘No hand shall touch him, but AHeb 12:20he shall surely be stoned or 1I.e. with arrowsshot through; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to BEx 19:17the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”
16 AHeb 12:18, 19, 21So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were 1Lit soundsthunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the 1Lit lower partfoot of the mountain.
The Loʀᴅ Visits Sinai
18 ADeut 4:11; Ps 104:32; 144:5Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Loʀᴅ descended upon it BEx 3:2; 24:17; Deut 5:4; 2 Chr 7:1-3; Heb 12:18in fire; and its smoke ascended like CGen 15:17; 19:28the smoke of a furnace, and DJudg 5:5; Ps 68:7, 8; Jer 4:24the whole mountain 1Or trembledquaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and APs 81:7God answered him with 1Or a voice; lit a soundthunder. 20 ANeh 9:13The Loʀᴅ came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Loʀᴅ called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 Then the Loʀᴅ spoke to Moses, “Go down, 1Lit testify towarn the people, so that AEx 3:5; 1 Sam 6:19they do not break through to the Loʀᴅ to gaze, and many of them 2Lit fallperish. 22  “Also let the AEx 19:24; 24:5; Lev 10:3; 21:6-8priests who come near to the Loʀᴅ consecrate themselves, or else the Loʀᴅ will break out against them.” 23 Moses said to the Loʀᴅ, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You 1Lit testified towarned us, saying, ‘AEx 19:12Set bounds about the mountain and consecrate it.’ ” 24 Then the Loʀᴅ said to him, “1Lit Go, descendGo down and come up again, AEx 24:1, 9, 12you and Aaron with you; but do not let the BEx 19:22priests and the people break through to come up to the Loʀᴅ, or He will break forth upon them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
