Jacob Moves to Bethel
Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to AGen 28:19Bethel and 1Lit dwelllive there, and make an altar there to BGen 28:13God, who appeared to you CGen 27:43when you fled 2Lit from the face offrom your brother Esau.” So Jacob said to his AGen 18:19; Josh 24:15household and to all who were with him, “Put away BGen 31:19, 30, 34the foreign gods which are among you, and CEx 19:10, 14purify yourselves and change your garments; and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make AGen 28:20-22an altar there to God, BPs 107:6who answered me in the day of my distress and CGen 28:15; 31:3, 42has been with me 1Lit in the way whichwherever I have gone.” So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which 1Lit were in their handthey had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the 2Or terebinthoak which was near Shechem.
As they journeyed, there was 1Or a terror of GodAEx 15:16; 23:27; Deut 2:25a great terror upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to AGen 28:19; 48:3Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. AGen 35:3He built an altar there, and called the place 1I.e. the God of BethelEl-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled 2Lit from the face offrom his brother. Now AGen 24:59Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named 1I.e. oak of weepingAllon-bacuth.
Jacob Is Named Israel
Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He AGen 32:29blessed him. 10 AGen 17:5; 32:28God said to him,
“Your name is Jacob;
1Lit Your nameYou shall no longer be called Jacob,
But Israel shall be your name.”
Thus He called 2Lit his namehim Israel. 11 God also said to him,
“I am 1Heb El ShaddaiAGen 17:1; 28:3; Ex 6:3God Almighty;
BGen 9:1, 7Be fruitful and multiply;
A nation and a CGen 48:4company of nations shall 2Or come into beingcome from you,
And DGen 17:6, 16; 36:31kings shall 2Or come into beingcome forth from 3Lit your loinsyou.
12 AGen 12:7; 13:15; 26:3, 4; 28:13; Ex 32:13The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac,
I will give it to you,
And I will give the land to your 1Lit seeddescendants after you.”
13 Then AGen 17:22; 18:33God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him. 14 Jacob set up AGen 28:18, 19; 31:45a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. 15 So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, 1I.e. the house of GodAGen 28:19Bethel.
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to AGen 35:19; 48:7; Ruth 4:11; Mic 5:2Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she 1Lit had difficulty in her giving birthsuffered severe labor. 17 When she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for now AGen 30:24you have another son.” 18 It came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him 1I.e. the son of my sorrowBen-oni; but his father called him 2I.e. the son of the right handBenjamin. 19 So AGen 48:7Rachel died and was buried on the way to BRuth 1:2; 4:11; Mic 5:2Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the A1 Sam 10:2pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21 Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the 1Heb Migdal-ederAMic 4:8tower of 2Or flockEder.
22 It came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that AGen 49:4; 1 Chr 5:1Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it.
The Sons of Israel
Now there were twelve sons of Jacob— 23 AGen 29:31-35; 30:18-20; 46:8; Ex 1:1-4the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun; 24 AGen 30:22-24; 35:18the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin; 25 and AGen 30:5-8the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali; 26 and AGen 30:10-13the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 Jacob came to his father Isaac at AGen 13:18; 18:1; 23:19Mamre of BJosh 14:15Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.
28 Now the days of Isaac were AGen 25:26one hundred and eighty years. 29 Isaac breathed his last and died and was AGen 25:8; 49:33gathered to his people, an BGen 15:15old man 1Lit and satisfied with daysof ripe age; and CGen 25:9his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
