So be very careful; 5 do not 1Or engage in strife withprovoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a 2Lit treading of a sole of a footfootstep AGen 36:8; Josh 24:4because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6  “You shall buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. 7  “For the Loʀᴅ your God has blessed you in all 1Lit the work of your handthat you have done; He has known your 2Lit goingswanderings through this ADeut 1:19great wilderness. These BNum 14:33, 34; 32:13; Deut 2:14forty years the Loʀᴅ your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing.” ’

8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the ADeut 1:1Arabah road, away from Elath and BNum 33:35; 1 Kin 9:26from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9  “Then the Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of 1Lit histheir land as a possession, because I have given ANum 21:15, 28; Deut 2:18, 29Ar to BGen 19:36, 37the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 10 (The AGen 14:5Emim lived there formerly, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim, they are also regarded as AGen 14:5; Deut 2:20Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 AGen 36:20; Deut 2:22The Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, BNum 21:25, 35just as Israel did to the land of 1Lit histheir possession which the Loʀᴅ gave to them.) 13 ‘Now arise and cross over the 1Or wadibrook Zered yourselves.’ So we crossed over the 1Or wadibrook Zered. 14  “Now the 1Lit days in which we wenttime that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the 2Or wadibrook Zered was ADeut 2:7thirty-eight years, until BNum 14:29-35; 26:64, 65; Ps 106:26; 1 Cor 10:5all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, as CDeut 1:34, 35the Loʀᴅ had sworn to them. 15  “AJude 5Moreover the hand of the Loʀᴅ was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.

16 “So it came about when ADeut 2:14all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the Loʀᴅ spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘Today you shall cross over ADeut 2:9Ar, the border of Moab. 19  ‘When you come opposite the AGen 19:38sons of Ammon, do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to BDeut 2:9the sons of Lot as a possession.’ 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the ADeut 2:11Rephaim, for Rephaim formerly lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, 21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, but the Loʀᴅ destroyed them before them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who AGen 36:8; Deut 2:5live in Seir, when He destroyed BDeut 2:12the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. 23 And the AJosh 13:3Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the 1I.e. PhilistinesBGen 10:14; 1 Chr 1:12Caphtorim who came from 2I.e. CreteCJer 47:4; Amos 9:7Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) 24 ‘Arise, set out, and pass through the 1Or wadiANum 21:13, 14; Judg 11:18valley of Arnon. Look! 26 “ANum 21:21-32; Deut 1:4; Judg 11:19-21So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land, I will 1Lit go by the waytravel only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28  ‘You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, ANum 20:19only let me pass through on 1Lit my feetfoot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in ADeut 2:9Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which the Loʀᴅ our God is giving to us.’ 30  “But ANum 21:23Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass 1Lit by himthrough his land; for the BEx 4:21; Josh 11:20Loʀᴅ your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to deliver him into your hand, as he is today. 31  “The Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land 1Lit before youover to you. Begin to 2Lit possessoccupy, that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon 1Lit he andwith all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33  “AEx 23:31; Deut 7:2The Loʀᴅ our God delivered him 1Lit before usover to us, and we 2Lit smoteBDeut 29:7defeated him with his sons and all his people. 34  “So we captured all his cities at that time and 1Or put under the banADeut 3:6; 7:2utterly destroyed 2Lit every city of man...the men, women and children of every city.
