1 “ADeut 20:16-18When the Loʀᴅ your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, BActs 13:19seven nations greater and stronger than you, 2 and when the Loʀᴅ your God delivers them before you and you 1Lit smitedefeat them, ANum 31:17; Josh 11:11then you shall 2Lit surely devote to the banutterly destroy them. BEx 23:32You shall make no covenant with them CDeut 7:16; 13:8and show no favor to them. 3  “Furthermore, AEx 34:15, 16; Josh 23:12; Ezra 9:2you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your 1Lit daughterdaughters to 2Lit his sontheir sons, nor shall you take 3Lit his daughtertheir daughters for your 4Lit sonsons. 4  “For 1Lit hethey will turn your 2Lit sonsons away from 3Lit afterfollowing Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Loʀᴅ will be kindled against you and ADeut 4:26He will quickly destroy you. 5  “But thus you shall do to them: AEx 23:24; 34:13; Deut 12:3you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their 1I.e. wooden symbols of a female deityAsherim, and burn their graven images with fire. 6  “For you are AEx 19:6; Deut 14:2, 21; Ps 50:5; Jer 2:3a holy people to the Loʀᴅ your God; the Loʀᴅ your God has chosen you to be BEx 19:5; Deut 4:20; 14:2; 26:18; Ps 135:4; Titus 2:14; 1 Pet 2:9a people for His 1Or special treasureown possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the 2Lit groundearth.

7 “ADeut 4:37The Loʀᴅ did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but because the Loʀᴅ loved you and kept the AEx 32:13oath which He swore to your forefathers, BEx 13:3the Loʀᴅ brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of 1Lit slavesslavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9  “Know therefore that the Loʀᴅ your God, ADeut 4:35, 39He is God, BIs 49:7; 1 Cor 1:9; 1 Thess 5:24; 2 Tim 2:13the faithful God, CEx 20:6; Dan 9:4who keeps 1Lit theHis covenant and 1Lit theHis lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who DDeut 5:10love Him and keep His commandments; 10 but AIs 59:18; Nah 1:2repays those who hate Him to 1Lit his facetheir faces, to destroy 2Lit himthem; He will not delay 3Lit towith him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11  “Therefore, you shall keep the commandment and the statutes and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

12 “ALev 26:3-13; Deut 28:1-14Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Loʀᴅ your God will keep with you 1Lit theHis covenant and 1Lit theHis lovingkindness which He swore to your forefathers. 13  “He will APs 146:8; Prov 15:9; John 14:21love you and bless you and BLev 26:9; Deut 13:17; 30:5multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, 1Lit on the groundin the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you. 14  “You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female AEx 23:26barren among you or among your cattle. 15  “AEx 15:26The Loʀᴅ will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you. 16  “You shall consume all the peoples whom the Loʀᴅ your God will deliver to you; ADeut 7:2your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be BEx 23:33; Judg 8:27; Ps 106:36a snare to you.

17 “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I ANum 33:53dispossess them?’ 18 you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well APs 105:5remember what the Loʀᴅ your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: 19 ADeut 4:34the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Loʀᴅ your God brought you out. So shall the Loʀᴅ your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20  “Moreover, the Loʀᴅ your God will send AEx 23:28; Josh 24:12the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish. 21  “You shall not dread 1Lit from before themthem, for AEx 29:45; Josh 3:10the Loʀᴅ your God is in your midst, BDeut 10:17; Neh 1:5; 9:32a great and awesome God. 22  “AEx 23:29, 30The Loʀᴅ your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the 1Lit beasts of the fieldwild beasts would grow too numerous for you. 23  “AEx 23:27; Josh 10:10But the Loʀᴅ your God will deliver them before you, and will 1Lit confuse them withthrow them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24  “AJosh 6:2; 10:23-25He will deliver their kings into your hand so that you will make their name perish from under heaven; BDeut 11:25; Josh 1:5; 10:8; 23:9no man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them. 25  “The graven images of their gods you are to AEx 32:20; Deut 12:3; 1 Chr 14:12burn with fire; you shall BEx 20:17not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be CDeut 7:16; Judg 8:27snared by it, for it is an DDeut 17:1abomination to the Loʀᴅ your God. 26  “You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the ALev 27:28fban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.
