Be Strong
1 You therefore, my 1Or childA2 Tim 1:2son, BEph 6:10be strong in the grace that is in C2 Tim 1:1Christ Jesus. 2 The things A2 Tim 1:13which you have heard from me in the presence of B1 Tim 6:12many witnesses, C1 Tim 1:18entrust these to D1 Tim 1:12faithful men who will be E2 Cor 2:14ff; 3:5able to teach others also. 3 A2 Tim 1:8Suffer hardship with me, as a good B1 Cor 9:7; 1 Tim 1:18soldier of C2 Tim 1:1Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service A2 Pet 2:20entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 Also if anyone A1 Cor 9:25competes as an athlete, he 1Lit is not crowneddoes not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. 6 A1 Cor 9:10The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
8 Remember Jesus Christ, AActs 2:24risen from the dead, BMatt 1:1descendant of David, CRom 2:16according to my gospel, 9 1Lit in whichfor which I A2 Tim 1:8; 2:3suffer hardship even to BPhil 1:7imprisonment as a CLuke 23:32criminal; but D1 Thess 1:8the word of God EActs 28:31; 2 Tim 4:17is not imprisoned. 10 For this reason ACol 1:24I endure all things for BLuke 18:7; Titus 1:1the sake of those who are chosen, C2 Cor 1:6; 1 Thess 5:9so that they also may obtain the D1 Cor 1:21salvation which is in E2 Tim 1:1; 2:1, 3Christ Jesus and with it F2 Cor 4:17; 1 Pet 5:10eternal glory. 11 A1 Tim 1:15It is a trustworthy statement:
For BRom 6:8; 1 Thess 5:10if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, AMatt 19:28; Luke 22:29; Rom 5:17; 8:17we will also reign with Him;
If we 1Lit will denyBMatt 10:33; Luke 12:9; 1 Tim 5:8deny Him, He also will deny us;
13 If we are faithless, ARom 3:3; 1 Cor 1:9He remains faithful, for BNum 23:19; Titus 1:2He cannot deny Himself.
An Unashamed Workman
14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly A1 Tim 5:21; 2 Tim 4:1charge them in the presence of God not to B1 Tim 6:4; 2 Tim 2:23; Titus 3:9wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to ARom 6:13; James 1:12present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling BEph 1:13; James 1:18the word of truth. 16 But ATitus 3:9avoid B1 Tim 1:9; 6:20worldly and empty chatter, for 1Lit they will make further progress in ungodlinessit will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their 1Lit wordtalk will spread like 2Or cancergangrene. Among them are A1 Tim 1:20Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that A1 Cor 15:12the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset B1 Tim 1:19; Titus 1:11the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the AIs 28:16f; 1 Tim 3:15firm foundation of God stands, having this BJohn 3:33seal, “CJohn 10:14; 1 Cor 8:3The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “DLuke 13:27; 1 Cor 1:2Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”
20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and ARom 9:21some to honor and some to dishonor. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from A1 Tim 6:11; 2 Tim 2:16-18these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, B2 Cor 9:8; Eph 2:10; 2 Tim 3:17prepared for every good work. 22 Now A1 Tim 6:11flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, B1 Tim 1:14faith, love and peace, with those who CActs 7:59call on the Lord D1 Tim 1:5from a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant A1 Tim 6:4; 2 Tim 2:14; Titus 3:9speculations, knowing that they BTitus 3:9; James 4:1produce 1Lit fightingsquarrels. 24 A1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, B1 Tim 3:2able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 AGal 6:1; Titus 3:2; 1 Pet 3:15with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, BActs 8:22if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to C1 Tim 2:4the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from A1 Tim 3:7the snare of the devil, having been BLuke 5:10held captive 1Or by him, to do His willby him to do his will.
