Concerning Divorce
AMatt 7:28When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and BMatt 19:1-9: Mark 10:1-12came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; and 1Lit manylarge crowds followed Him, and AMatt 4:23He healed them there.
Some Pharisees came to 1Lit HimJesus, testing Him and asking, “AMatt 5:31Is it lawful for a man to 2Or send awaydivorce his wife for any reason at all?” And He answered and said, “Have you not read AGen 1:27; 5:2that He who created them from the beginning ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ᴍᴀʟᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ꜰᴇᴍᴀʟᴇ, and said, ‘AGen 2:24; Eph 5:31Foʀ ᴛʜɪs ʀᴇᴀsoɴ ᴀ ᴍᴀɴ sʜᴀʟʟ ʟᴇᴀvᴇ ʜɪs ꜰᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍoᴛʜᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ʙᴇ ᴊoɪɴᴇᴅ ᴛo ʜɪs wɪꜰᴇ, ᴀɴᴅ B1 Cor 6:16ᴛʜᴇ ᴛwo sʜᴀʟʟ ʙᴇcoᴍᴇ oɴᴇ ꜰʟᴇsʜ’?  “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” They *said to Him, “ADeut 24:1-4; Matt 5:31Why then did Moses command to ɢɪvᴇ ʜᴇʀ ᴀ cᴇʀᴛɪꜰɪcᴀᴛᴇ oꜰ ᴅɪvoʀcᴇ ᴀɴᴅ sᴇɴᴅ her ᴀwᴀʏ?” He *said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to 1Or send awaydivorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.  “And I say to you, AMatt 5:32whoever 1Or sends awaydivorces his wife, except for 2Lit fornicationimmorality, and marries another woman 3Some early mss read makes her commit adulterycommits adultery4Some early mss add and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
10 The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, A1 Cor 7:7ffNot all men can accept this statement, but BMatt 13:11only those to whom it has been given. 12  “For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.
Jesus Blesses Little Children
13 AMatt 19:13-15: Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, 1Or Permit the childrenAMatt 18:3; Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17; 1 Cor 14:20; 1 Pet 2:2Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for BMatt 5:3the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.
The Rich Young Ruler
16 AMatt 19:16-29: Mark 10:17-30; Luke 18:18-30;Luke 10:25-28And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain BMatt 25:46eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but ALev 18:5; Neh 9:29; Ezek 20:21if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, AEx 20:13-16; Deut 5:17-20Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ coᴍᴍɪᴛ ᴍᴜʀᴅᴇʀ; Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ coᴍᴍɪᴛ ᴀᴅᴜʟᴛᴇʀʏ; Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ sᴛᴇᴀʟ; Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ ʙᴇᴀʀ ꜰᴀʟsᴇ wɪᴛɴᴇss; 19 AEx 20:12; Deut 5:16Hoɴoʀ ʏoᴜʀ ꜰᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍoᴛʜᴇʀ; and BLev 19:18Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ʟovᴇ ʏoᴜʀ ɴᴇɪɢʜʙoʀ ᴀs ʏoᴜʀsᴇʟꜰ.” 20 The young man *said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be 1Or perfectcomplete, go and ALuke 12:33; 16:9; Acts 2:45; 4:34fsell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have BMatt 6:20treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, AMatt 13:22; Mark 10:23f; Luke 18:24it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24  “Again I say to you, AMark 10:25; Luke 18:25it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” 26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, AGen 18:14; Job 42:2; Jer 32:17; Zech 8:6; Mark 10:27; Luke 1:37; 18:27With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
The Disciples’ Reward
27 Then Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” 28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when AMatt 25:31the Son of Man will sit on 1Lit the throne of His gloryHis glorious throne, BLuke 22:30; Rev 3:21; 4:4; 11:16; 20:4you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29  “And AMatt 6:33; Mark 10:29f; Luke 18:29feveryone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother 1One early ms adds or wifeor children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive 2One early ms reads a hundred timesmany times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30  “AMatt 20:16; Mark 10:31; Luke 13:30But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.
