Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce
AMark 10:1-12: Matt 19:1-9Getting up, He *went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds *gathered around Him again, and, BMatt 4:23; 26:55; Mark 1:21; 2:13; 4:2; 6:2, 6, 34; 12:35; 14:49according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.
Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to 1Or send awaydivorce a wife. And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “ADeut 24:1, 3; Matt 5:31Moses permitted a man ᴛo wʀɪᴛᴇ ᴀ cᴇʀᴛɪꜰɪcᴀᴛᴇ oꜰ ᴅɪvoʀcᴇ ᴀɴᴅ 1Or divorce hersᴇɴᴅ her ᴀwᴀʏ.” But Jesus said to them, 1Or With reference toAMatt 19:8Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.  “But AMark 13:19; 2 Pet 3:4from the beginning of creation, God BGen 1:27; 5:2ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ᴛʜᴇᴍ ᴍᴀʟᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ꜰᴇᴍᴀʟᴇ.  “AGen 2:24Foʀ ᴛʜɪs ʀᴇᴀsoɴ ᴀ ᴍᴀɴ sʜᴀʟʟ ʟᴇᴀvᴇ ʜɪs ꜰᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍoᴛʜᴇʀ1Many late mss add and shall cling to his wife, AGen 2:24ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛwo sʜᴀʟʟ ʙᴇcoᴍᴇ oɴᴇ ꜰʟᴇsʜ; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.  “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”
10 In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again. 11 And He *said to them, AMatt 5:32Whoever 1Or sends awaydivorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and A1 Cor 7:11, 13if she herself 1Or sends awaydivorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”
Jesus Blesses Little Children
13 AMark 10:13-16: Matt 19:13-15; Luke 18:15-17And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; AMatt 5:3for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15  “Truly I say to you, AMatt 18:3; 19:14; Luke 18:17; 1 Cor 14:20; 1 Pet 2:2whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all. 16 And He AMark 9:36took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.
The Rich Young Ruler
17 AMark 10:17-31: Matt 19:16-30; Luke 18:18-30As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and BMark 1:40knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to CMatt 25:34; Luke 10:25; 18:18; Acts 20:32; Eph 1:18; 1 Pet 1:4inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19  “You know the commandments, ‘AEx 20:12-16; Deut 5:16-20Do ɴoᴛ ᴍᴜʀᴅᴇʀ, Do ɴoᴛ coᴍᴍɪᴛ ᴀᴅᴜʟᴛᴇʀʏ, Do ɴoᴛ sᴛᴇᴀʟ, Do ɴoᴛ ʙᴇᴀʀ ꜰᴀʟsᴇ wɪᴛɴᴇss, Do not defraud, Hoɴoʀ ʏoᴜʀ ꜰᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍoᴛʜᴇʀ.’ ” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept AMatt 19:20all these things from my youth up.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have AMatt 6:20treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words 1Or he became gloomyhe was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.
23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, AMatt 19:23How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples AMark 1:27were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25  “AMatt 19:24It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were even more astonished and said to Him, “1Lit AndThen who can be saved?” 27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, AMatt 19:26With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
28 AMatt 4:20-22Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, AMatt 6:33; 19:29; Luke 18:29fthere is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 1Lit if notbut that he will receive a hundred times as much now in 2Lit this timethe present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in AMatt 12:32the age to come, eternal life. 31  “But AMatt 19:30; 20:16; Luke 13:30many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

35 1Or JacobAMark 10:35-45: Matt 20:20-28James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “1Lit Give to usGrant that we AMatt 19:28may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able AMatt 20:22to drink the cup that I drink, or BLuke 12:50to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink AActs 12:2; Rev 1:9you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40  “But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; AMatt 13:11but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 AMark 10:42-45; Luke 22:25-27Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with 1Or JacobJames and John. 42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43  “But it is not this way among you, AMatt 20:26; 23:11; Mark 9:35; Luke 22:26but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45  “For even the Son of Man AMatt 20:28did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His 1Or soullife a ransom for many.”

So they *called the blind man, saying to him, “AMatt 9:2Take courage, stand up!
