A Paralytic Healed
Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the sea and came to AMatt 4:13; Mark 5:21His own city.
AMatt 9:2-8: Mark 2:3-12; Luke 5:18-26And they brought to Him a BMatt 4:24; 9:6paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, CMatt 9:22; 14:27; Mark 6:50; 10:49; John 16:33; Acts 23:11Take courage, 1Lit childson; DMark 2:5, 9; Luke 5:20, 23; 7:48your sins are forgiven.” And some of the scribes said 1Lit amongto themselves, “This fellow AMark 3:28, 29blasphemes.” And Jesus AMatt 12:25; Luke 6:8; 9:47knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?  “Which is easier, to say, ‘AMatt 9:2, 6; Mark 2:5, 9; Luke 5:20, 23; 7:48Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk’?  “But so that you may know that AMatt 8:20; John 5:27the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the BMatt 4:24; 9:2paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” And he got up and 1Or departedwent home. But when the crowds saw this, they were 1Lit afraidawestruck, and AMatt 5:16; 15:31; Mark 2:12; Luke 2:20; 5:25, 26; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15; 23:47; John 15:8; Acts 4:21; 11:18; 21:20; 2 Cor 9:13; Gal 1:24glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew Called
AMatt 9:9-17: Mark 2:14-22; Luke 5:27-38As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called BMatt 10:3; Mark 2:14; 3:18; Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He *said to him, CMatt 8:22Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.
10 Then it happened that as 1Lit HeJesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and 2I.e. irreligious Jewssinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “AMatt 11:19; Mark 2:16; Luke 5:30; 15:2Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, It is not AMark 2:17; Luke 5:31those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13  “But go and learn 1Lit what isAMatt 12:7what this means: ‘BHos 6:6I ᴅᴇsɪʀᴇ 2Or mercycoᴍᴘᴀssɪoɴ, 3I.e. more thanᴀɴᴅ ɴoᴛ sᴀcʀɪꜰɪcᴇ,’ for CMark 2:17; Luke 5:32; 1 Tim 1:15I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The Question about Fasting
14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him, asking, “Why do we and ALuke 18:12the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “The 1Lit sons of the wedding placeattendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16  “But no one puts 1Lit that which is put ona patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for 2Lit that which fills upthe patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17  “Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, AMatt 1:1; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30, 31; 21:9, 15; 22:42; Mark 10:47, 48; 12:35; Luke 18:38, 39; 20:41fSon of David!” 28 When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, 1Or Let it be done; Gr commandIt shall be done to you AMatt 8:13; 9:22according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus AMatt 8:4sternly warned them: “See that no one knows about this! 31 But they went out and AMatt 4:24; 9:26; 14:1; Mark 1:28, 45; Luke 4:14, 37; 5:15; 7:17spread the news about Him throughout all that land.
32 As they were going out, AMatt 12:22, 24a mute, BMatt 4:24demon-possessed man 1Lit they broughtwas brought to Him. 33 After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “AMark 2:12Nothing like this has 1Lit ever appearedever been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He AMatt 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15; John 7:20fcasts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”
35 Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, AMatt 4:23; Mark 1:14teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
36 AMatt 14:14; 15:32; Mark 6:34; 8:2Seeing the 1Lit crowdspeople, He felt compassion for them, BNum 27:17; Ezek 34:5; Zech 10:2; Mark 6:34because they were 2Or harasseddistressed and 3Lit thrown downdispirited like sheep 4Lit not havingwithout a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, ALuke 10:2The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38  “Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
