The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of AMatt 21:17; John 11:18Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister BLuke 10:38; John 11:5, 19ffMartha. It was the Mary who ALuke 7:38; John 12:3anointed BLuke 7:13; John 11:3, 21, 32; 13:13fthe Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “ALuke 7:13; John 11:2, 21, 32; 13:13fLord, behold, BJohn 11:5, 11, 36he whom You love is sick.” But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for AJohn 9:3; 10:38; 11:40the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” Now Jesus loved AJohn 11:1Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. Then after this He *said to the disciples, AJohn 10:40Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples *said to Him, “AMatt 23:7Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking BJohn 8:59; 10:31to stone You, and are You going there again?” Jesus answered, ALuke 13:33; John 9:4; 12:35Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10  “But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 This He said, and after that He *said to them, “Our AJohn 11:3friend Lazarus BMatt 27:52; Mark 5:39; John 11:13; Acts 7:60has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will 1Lit be savedrecover.” 13 Now AMatt 9:24; Luke 8:52Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of 1Lit the slumber of sleepliteral sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.” 16 AMatt 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; John 14:5; 20:26-28; Acts 1:13Therefore Thomas, who is called 1I.e. the TwinBJohn 20:24; 21:2Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb AJohn 11:39four days. 18 Now AJohn 11:1Bethany was near Jerusalem, about 1Lit 15 stadia (9,090 ft)two miles off; 19 and many of AJohn 1:19; 11:8the Jews had come to BJohn 11:1Martha and Mary, C1 Sam 31:13; 1 Chr 10:12; Job 2:11; John 11:31to console them concerning their brother. 20 ALuke 10:38-42Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but ALuke 10:38-42Mary 1Lit was sittingstayed at the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “AJohn 11:2Lord, BJohn 11:32, 37if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22  “Even now I know that AJohn 9:31; 11:41fwhatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “ADan 12:2; John 5:28f; Acts 24:15I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, AJohn 1:4; 5:26; 6:39f; Rev 1:18I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me AJohn 6:47, 50, 51; 8:51will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are 1I.e. the MessiahAMatt 16:16; Luke 2:11the Christ, the Son of God, even 2The Coming One was the Messianic titleBJohn 6:14He who comes into the world.”
28 When she had said this, she AJohn 11:30went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “BMatt 26:18; Mark 14:14; Luke 22:11; John 13:13The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she *got up quickly and was coming to Him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but AJohn 11:20was still in the place where Martha met Him. 31 AJohn 11:19, 33Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and BJohn 11:19consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “AJohn 11:2Lord, BJohn 11:21if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and AJohn 11:19the Jews who came with her also weeping, He BJohn 11:38was deeply moved in spirit and 1Lit troubled HimselfCJohn 12:27; 13:21was troubled, 34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus ALuke 19:41; John 11:33wept. 36 So AJohn 11:19the Jews were saying, “See how He BJohn 11:3loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not this man, who AJohn 9:7opened the eyes of the blind man, 1Lit have caused that this man also not diehave kept this man also from dying?”
38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a AMatt 27:60; Mark 15:46; Luke 24:2; John 20:1cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time 1Lit he stinksthere will be a stench, for he has been dead AJohn 11:17four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, AJohn 11:4, 23ffDid I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the AMatt 27:60; Mark 15:46; Luke 24:2; John 20:1stone. Then Jesus BJohn 17:1; Acts 7:55raised His eyes, and said, CMatt 11:25Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42  “I knew that You always hear Me; but AJohn 12:30; 17:21because of the 1Lit crowdpeople standing around I said it, so that they may believe that BJohn 3:17You sent Me.” 43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” 44 The man who had died came forth, AJohn 19:40bound hand and foot with wrappings, and BJohn 20:7his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 AJohn 7:31Therefore many of the Jews BJohn 11:19; 12:17fwho came to Mary, and CJohn 2:23saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the AJohn 7:32, 45; 11:57Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
47 Therefore AJohn 7:32, 45; 11:57the chief priests and the Pharisees BMatt 26:3convened a CMatt 5:22council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many 1Or attesting miraclesDJohn 2:11signs. 48  “If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our AMatt 24:15place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, AMatt 26:3Caiaphas, BJohn 11:51; 18:13who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you take into account that AJohn 18:14it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he did not say this 1Lit from himselfon his own initiative, but AJohn 18:13being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also AJohn 10:16gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they AMatt 26:4planned together to kill Him.
54 Therefore Jesus AJohn 7:1no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called B2 Chr 13:19 mgEphraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
55 Now AMatt 26:1f; Mark 14:1; Luke 22:1; John 2:13; 12:1; 13:1the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover BNum 9:10; 2 Chr 30:17f; John 18:28to purify themselves. 56 So they AJohn 7:11were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now AJohn 11:47the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
