Signs of Christ’s Return
AMatt 24:1-51: Mark 13; Luke 21:5-36Jesus BMatt 21:23came out from the temple and was going away 1Lit andwhen His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, ALuke 19:44not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”
As He was sitting on AMatt 21:1the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of BMatt 16:27f; 24:27, 37, 39Your coming, and of the 1Or consummationend of the age?”
And Jesus answered and said to them, AJer 29:8See to it that no one misleads you.  “For AMatt 24:11, 24; Acts 5:36f; 1 John 2:18; 4:3many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the 1I.e. the MessiahChrist,’ and will mislead many.  “You will be hearing of ARev 6:4wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.  “For A2 Chr 15:6; Is 19:2; Rev 6:8, 12nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be BActs 11:28; Rev 6:5, 6famines and earthquakes.  “AMatt 24:8-20; Luke 21:12-24But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.
AMatt 10:17; John 16:2Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and BMatt 10:22; John 15:18ffyou will be hated by all nations because of My name. 10  “At that time many will 1Lit be caused to stumbleAMatt 11:6fall away and will 2Or hand overbetray one another and hate one another. 11  “Many AMatt 7:15; 24:24false prophets will arise and will mislead many. 12  “Because lawlessness is increased, 1Lit the love of manymost people’s love will grow cold. 13  “AMatt 10:22But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. 14  “This AMatt 4:23gospel of the kingdom BRom 10:18; Col 1:6, 23shall be preached in the whole 1Lit inhabited earthCLuke 2:1; 4:5; Acts 11:28; 17:6, 31; 19:27; Rom 10:18; Heb 1:6; 2:5; Rev 3:10; 16:14world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Perilous Times
15 “Therefore when you see the ADan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11ᴀʙoᴍɪɴᴀᴛɪoɴ oꜰ ᴅᴇsoʟᴀᴛɪoɴ which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in BMark 13:14; Luke 21:20; John 11:48; Acts 6:13f; 21:28the holy place (CMark 13:14; Rev 1:3let the reader understand), 16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17  “1Lit He whoWhoever is on A1 Sam 9:25; 2 Sam 11:2; Matt 10:27; Luke 5:19; 12:3; 17:31; Acts 10:9the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18  “1Lit He whoWhoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19  “But ALuke 23:29woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20  “But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21  “For then there will be a ADan 12:1; Joel 2:2; Matt 24:29great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. 22  “Unless those days had been cut short, no 1Lit fleshlife would have been saved; but for AMatt 22:14; 24:24, 31; Luke 18:7the sake of the 2Or chosen oneselect those days will be cut short. 23  “ALuke 17:23fThen if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the 1I.e. Parable of the Fig Tree
32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so, you too, when you see all these things, 1Or knowrecognize that 2Or itHe is near, right AJames 5:9; Rev 3:20at the 3Lit doorsdoor. 34  “Truly I say to you, AMatt 10:23; 16:28; 23:36this 1Or racegeneration will not pass away until all these things take place. 35  “AMatt 5:18; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
36 “But AMark 13:32; Acts 1:7of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37  “For 1Lit just as...were the daysthe AMatt 16:27; 24:3, 30, 39coming of the Son of Man will be BGen 6:5; 7:6-23; Luke 17:26fjust like the days of Noah. 38  “For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, AMatt 22:30marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that BGen 7:7Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not 1Lit knowunderstand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the AMatt 16:27; 24:3, 30, 37coming of the Son of Man be. 40  “Then there will be two men in the field; one 1Lit iswill be taken and one 1Lit iswill be left. 41  “ALuke 17:35Two women will be grinding at the 1I.e. handmillBEx 11:5; Deut 24:6; Is 47:2mill; one 2Lit iswill be taken and one 2Lit iswill be left.
Be Ready for His Coming
42 “Therefore AMatt 24:43, 44; 25:10, 13; Luke 12:39f; 21:36be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43  “But 1Lit know thisbe sure of this, that AMatt 24:42, 44; 25:10, 13; Luke 12:39f; 21:36if the head of the house had known BMatt 14:25; Mark 6:48; 13:35; Luke 12:38at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be 2Lit dug throughbroken into. 44  “For this reason AMatt 24:42, 43; 25:10, 13; Luke 12:39f; 21:36you also must be ready; for BMatt 24:27the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.
45 AMatt 24:45-51: Luke 12:42-46Who then is the BMatt 25:21, 23; Luke 16:10faithful and CMatt 7:24; 10:16; 25:2ffsensible slave whom his 1Or lordmaster DMatt 25:21, 23put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46  “Blessed is that slave whom his 1Or lordmaster finds so doing when he comes. 47  “Truly I say to you that AMatt 25:21, 23he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48  “But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My 1Or lordmaster 2Lit lingersis not coming for a long time,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the 1Or lordmaster of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will 1Or severely scourge himcut him in pieces and 2Lit appoint his portionassign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be AMatt 8:12weeping and gnashing of teeth.
