Basket of Fruit and Israel’s Captivity
1 Thus the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered Loʀᴅ, and so throughout the chGoᴅ showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit. 2 He said, “What do you see, Amos?” And AJer 24:3I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Loʀᴅ said to me, “The BEzek 7:2, 3, 6end has come for My people Israel. I will 1Lit pass him byCAmos 7:8spare them no longer. 3 “1Or They will howl the palace songsThe AAmos 5:23; 6:4, 5; 8:10songs of the palace will turn to BAmos 5:16wailing in that day,” declares the Lord Goᴅ. “Many will be the CAmos 6:8-10corpses; in every place 2Lit he has thrownthey will cast them forth 3Or hush!in silence.”
4 Hear this, you who 1Or snap atAPs 14:4; Prov 30:14; Amos 2:7; 5:11, 12trample the needy, to do away with the humble of the land, 5 saying,
“When will the ANum 28:11; 2 Kin 4:23new moon 1Lit pass bybe over,
So that we may sell grain,
And the BEx 31:13-17; Neh 13:15sabbath, that we may open the wheat market,
To make the 2Lit ephahbushel smaller and the shekel bigger,
And to CHos 12:7; Mic 6:11cheat with 3Lit balances of deceptiondishonest scales,
And the needy for a pair of sandals,
And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”
“Indeed, I will CPs 10:11; Hos 7:2; 8:13never forget any of their deeds.
8 “Because of this will not the land APs 18:7; 60:2; Is 5:25quake
And everyone who dwells in it BHos 4:3mourn?
Indeed, all of it will CJer 46:7, 8; Amos 9:5rise up like the Nile,
And it will be tossed about
And subside like the Nile of Egypt.
9 “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord Goᴅ,
“That I will make the AJob 5:14; Is 13:10; Jer 15:9; Mic 3:6sun go down at noon
And BIs 59:9, 10; Amos 4:13; 5:8make the earth dark in 1Lit a day of lightbroad daylight.
10 “Then I will AJob 20:23; Amos 5:21turn your festivals into mourning
And all your songs into 1Or a dirgelamentation;
And I will bring BIs 15:2, 3; Jer 48:37; Ezek 7:18; 27:31sackcloth on everyone’s loins
And baldness on every head.
And I will make it CJer 6:26; Zech 12:10like a time of mourning for an only son,
And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
11 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord Goᴅ,
“When I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water,
But rather A1 Sam 3:1; 2 Chr 15:3; Ps 74:9; Ezek 7:26; Mic 3:6for hearing the words of the Loʀᴅ.
12 “People will stagger from sea to sea
And from the north even to the east;
They will go to and fro to AEzek 20:3, 31seek the word of the Loʀᴅ,
But they will not find it.
13 “In that day the beautiful ALam 1:18; 2:21virgins
And the young men will BIs 41:17; Hos 2:3faint from thirst.
Who say, ‘As your god lives, O B1 Kin 12:28, 29Dan,’
And, ‘As the way of CAmos 5:5Beersheba lives,’
They will fall and DAmos 5:2not rise again.”
